Last picture for FF this week: scene adaptation from Coppola's Lost in Translation here. I absolutely love Charlotte's character, Johanssen is beautiful and someday, I would want to get lost in Japan tew. :) Random stuff: I still have exams on Monday so my life pretty much still sucks. Everyone is in summer mode already and I'm doing this paper on CIA intervention and doing statistics =( I am kind of hating Flickr right now. When I edit a picture in Photoshop, once I upload it here, all the colors become off. The original picture is supposedly more vibrant and reddish but when I uploaded it, the colors kind of muted. This is kind of making me sad. Are you guys experiencing it too? Anyway. All this flickr-ing has inspired me to do project 365. But i'll prolly post drawings, my cooking and bland-er self portraits. It's really fun to document creations everyday and I'm excited. Will post that on my tumblr tho because Flickr PRO is beyond me. I have no dollors. So, I'll prolly just use Flickr for FF :) Also, this conversation from the movie is making me happy/sad. :) Bob: What are you doing? Charlotte: My husband's a photographer, so he's here working. I wasn't doing anything so I came along. Bob: What do you do? Charlotte: I'm not sure yet, actually. Yay, happy weekend everybody! :)

Three devotees, brothers in the faith

Three devotees, brothers in the faith

Victor Serrano (in red shirt, left) While sitting on the ledge, I chatted up with Vic as he was waiting for the image to pass. He has been joining in the festivities for the past 30 years, starting when he was still 33 years old and hasn’t missed a single procession (there are two each year: 9 January and Good Friday). I asked him if he has a reason for joining, probably a promise, a penitence or a thanx for having a loved one cured or something. He just answered that he does this for the good of mankind. Those 30 years of going barefoot and joining the procession are attested on his broken toe nails. A family man from Mandaluyong, he accompanied around 50 other devotees in his area. When I asked if there were other family members with him, he answered that he does not intend to bring a kin or a son since he fears that they may not be upto the demands of participating in such a risky event. Devotees come from different backgrounds, from different walks of life from the downtrodden, poor to the wealthy with different reasons ranging from a promise to the pure thrill of just experiencing it. But seeing their faces light up after the act of endangering their lives in the name of God and, for others, the experience, makes me wonder if I will have the guts to do it. Start of Misa de Gallo

Start of Misa de Gallo
Made by estan
Misa de Gallo, Mass of the rooster, so called since its held just befor the break of dawn. Starting on the 16th of December, these 9 days (novena) is observed in all Catholic churches in the country and signals the traditional start of the Christmas season. Originally practiced in Mexico, it was extended to the Philippines by virtue of a papal decree in the 16th century. The reason behind this predawn mass is to enable the farmers during that period to have time to observe the novena before they head out for the fields. This church that is found in Guadalupe, Makati City, is the first Augustinian Order's house which later became a monastery. First under the guidance of the Nuestra Senora de Gratia, it was then transferred under the advocacy of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. Started at around 1601 and finished in 1630, its a popular pilgrimage site from that time with even from those from Spain and Mexico, Spanish governor generals, bishops and prominent people visit this church. It has survived earthquakes, the world war and neglect. Nuestra Senora de Gratia Makati City, Philippines blogged at Rough Groove www.estanli.net

For Filipina Flickrites: This week is movie scene week and since one of my frustrations in life is becoming an artista (lol. k. not rry) I was so excited for this. Unfortunately (or fortunately!!), when we were talking about it, we were all thinking of the same scenes and such, so Toni suggested that this week will be competitive as there will be no repition of scenes. Remade scene from the movie Amelie here. This is the scene where Amelie gets an instamatic from her mother to make up for the loss of her suicidal goldfish. But when she took a photo and a carcrash happened, her neighbor told her that her photographing caused accidents. TRF: The model is my sister Marish. In almost all the classrooms and labratories in school (even in the men's lavatories, I shit you not!), you can see vandalized text engraved in arm chairs, wooden tables and bathroom stall doors saying MARISH IS HOT!! This is her idea of propaganda.

devotees go barefoot as a sign of humility The Feast of the Black Nazarene attended by tens of thousands of Filipino Catholics, is an annual celebration of faith which takes place every 9th of January. It is the single largest festival in the Philippines. Highlight of the festivity is a procession which commemorates the first procession to transfer the Black Nazarene from a church in Intramuros to the Minor Basilica in Quiapo on Jan. 9, 1767. The devotion to the image of Jesus Christ is a practice that was sanctioned by two Catholic popes 200 years ago by granting indulgence to those who piously pray before the image of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo. The Black Nazarene, enshrined in the minor basilica in Quiapo, Manila, is a life-sized, dark-skinned statue of Jesus Christ, brought from Mexico to the Philippines in the year 1606. The image is believe by thousands of Filipino catholics to have magical and miraculous powers. The Philippines is the only country in Asia with a Catholic majority. I want to ride my bicycle

Queen reference, woot. Anyway, this picture right here was taken 2 years ago in one of our Visayas landtrips. Random kids were sharing a bike for 1, in some ro-ro (it's a big boat where you can board cars, buses and trucks) pier. Yes, we travelled the middle part of the Philippines in a car, hopping around the islands. It was crazy. We didn't take a bath for days, we ate stale cold food and we peed in holes in grounds and in forests! EEEW, i know! But it was quite the adventure. Anyway, today is awesome because today (well, rather, yesterday) is the day I learn to make GIFs!! Friends slept over and we just bored ourselves and ate unhealthy snacks. Yey for boredom and photoshop! Also, random fact. I've been trying for years, but I can't seem to learn how to a ride a bike. This makes me sad :(

Captain America Returns

Steve Rogers (a.k.a. Captain America) was assassinated during Marvel Comics' Civil War. But every comic reader knows that nobody important really stays buried in comics. True enough, Marvel will bring back the original Captain America in a crossover this year called Avengers/Invaders. A notable difference is that this *is* the Captain America your father grew up with. This is Steve Rogers, time traveling from World War 2 into present day America along with his super friends from the Invaders team. This photo is just a Photoshop exercise using I took and based on Alex Ross' beautiful and impressive cover featuring Cap (inset). Fire background comes from a free stock photo.

A few months before December, these vendors are already lighting up the highways and roads of Metro Manila with their splendid lanterns. These are usually made from split bamboo, capiz shells (a kind of translucent white shell that were used to adorn old house windows) colored plastic, spray paint, and christmas lights. The price ranges from P500 for a simple craft to as high as P9,000 (almost $200) for the big, huge and intricate designs. For these vendors, they have been selling at this spot near the South Super Highway in the Makati City portion for the past 20 years. But one should go to Pampanga for the lantern festival to experience those humongous, brilliantly lit christmas lanterns. Makati City, Philippines www.estanli.net

manila burning

manila burning
Made by inania
On the second day of 2008, I hired a car to go to Makati. On the way, I saw smoke rising from a building behind Roxas Boulevard, and I asked the driver, Cobi, what had happened. He said that a fire had been raging in a Baclaran shopping centre since 4 a.m. It turned out that he was one of Manila's volunteer firemen - officials are unlikely to put out a fire without a bribe - and had been up before dawn fighting the flames. Cobi saw that I was taking pictures and asked if I wanted to get closer. Needless to say, I said yes. He stopped the car, and as I approached the thick black cloud that loomed over Baclaran, I spotted this young boy on top of a rescue truck, sitting still amid the surrounding chaos.

Lord give me grace, and dancing feet And the power to impress Lord give me grace, and dancing feet Let me outshine the moon ~ The Bloc Party's The Prayer For Filipina Flickrites: In the Philippines, especially in Luzon and Visayas, almost everyone are either Christians or Catholics. It's the only Asian country to be predominantly Christian anyway. I graduated both my highschool and gradeschool in different all girls Catholic schools and they had the most absurd rules like, don't wear make up or don't dye your hair, or your skirt must be exactly 2 inches below the knee. It was crazy. Explored March 16, 2009: I am in complete disbelief. Thanks to everyone for liking this photo! <3

This figure is from the new Marvel Universe toyline. Also check out . :D For a 3.75 inch action figure, it's wonderfully articulated and incredibly detailed but expensive compared to it's DC Universe, Star Wars and GI Joe counterparts. If you're curious about this toyline, pick Iron Man first as, in my opinion, he's visibly the best looking from the first wave. Gonna add some Photoshop effects later. Sparky electric bolts and glowing stuff. ^.^ Strobist: Vivitar 285 with a shoebox-softbox, above and camera left, triggered wirelessly.

Metro Manila, Philippines this photo was chosen by Jose Rey as a logon screen for Windows XP. check this out: www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=7468&libid=26 taken near the Blanco Tree and from the same mountain where the Angono Petroglyphs Rock Shelter is located. I'm pretty sure this vantage view 3,000 yrs b.c. inspired ancient filipinos to make the petroglyphs. If not for the overcast and the skyscrapers, you can see a reflection and a portion of manila bay. A little bit to the left is a full view of Laguna de Bay (not in this picture though).

yes, it works, the new 2.2 firmware update on the 1st generation iPod Touch now allows it to accept dock-based microphones with no modding necessary. it can now make Fring calls. before 2.1, you can only hear the other side talk, but now they can hear you too. but the 1st generation iPod Touch won't be able to use the new earbud-mic combo released by Apple though. just dock-based microphones like this Macally iVoicePro.

For FF: Scene from the Virgin Suicides of course. Screencap here. The book was wonderful, like the movie. Coppola is awesome; her movies are like poetry. <3333 Anyway, this was kind of hard to do because there were no fields near my place. So what I did was, I kind of copy pasted my picture to the original picture's background. I wasn't very confident on posting this beacuse I thought it kind of looked too fake. But my Plurk friends thought it was okay so, yah.
