AKIBA Scenario

AKIBA Scenario
Made by ajpscs
AKIBA scenario AKIHABARA (秋葉原) also known as Electric Town or AKIBA in short. Its best-known as one of the largest shopping areas on Earth for electronic, computer, anime, and otaku goods. The character of Akihabara has constantly changed over the decades and continues to do so. A recent development is the emergence of Akihabara as a center of Japanese animation culture. OTAKU culture in Akihabara has become increasingly famous in the recent years. Many people there have unique lifestyles, centered on technological enterprises and a love for Anime/Manga, that have made them outsiders in other sections of Japanese society. Otaku are afforded the chance to gather here and avoid alienation imposed by others who do not share their specific interests. The presence of such prolific GEEKY behavior has led to Akihabara being seen as a mecca of sorts for otaku, as well as to the term Akiba-kei, or Akiba-type. In addition to conventional stores, various other animation related establishments have appeared in the area, such as cosplay (costume play) cafes, where waitresses are dressed up like anime characters, and manga kissaten (comics cafes), where customers can read comics, watch DVDs and surf the internet. Maid-kissa are coffee shops where the waitresses where fantasy like maid costumes. They dress up to look like characters from famous anime or Japanese comics. Since Akihabara caters not only to electronic enthusiasts but also young Japanese otaku which translates roughly to NERDS in English. Every Sundays at Chuo-Dori, the main street in Akihabara you can find the MAIDS passing out pamphlets to their shops to passers by. Tokyo From Roppongi at Night

Tokyo From Roppongi at Night
Made by The Devil in the Detail
View from the top of the Mori Building (Roppongi Hills) towards Shinjuku which is the glow in the upper right. So, went off for drinks last night and thought I'd drop by Roppongi Hills for a few photos. Got some great architectural shots and a few reasonable night city shots. Most were standard 3xp, high iso without a tripod. Got lots of reflections and forehead grease window smears as well as the +2 exposures being rather blurred. I processed them and then did the same for the single raws of the normal exposure shots with some noise reduction and sharpening and as it turns out these were much better, as above. They lacked some of the 'glow' of the 3xp shots but more than made up for this in detail. The full 21 MP has so much detail, I think I'm gonna try to make an A3 print of it. Anyway, here's the little version for flickr. Once again, thanks everyone for your comments on my pictues. It's great to have so many people interested in my shots. I'm always surprised that the ones I think are mediocre get lots of attention and the ones I really like sometimes don't but I put that more down to personal taste. Most (if not all) of the development of my style comes from seeing the great work that all my contacts make, whether I comment on them or not. I see great stuff by you, wonder how you did it and this leads me in new directions. I'm happy to say that some of the shots that blew me away when I first joined flickr don't blow me away as much as they used to and some of them I feel I am even capable of now, but then the things those poeple are doing now is even better. Have a great weekend everyone. Back to work tomorrow.

Urban Energy

Urban Energy

The ultimate urban metropolis, this is Tokyo, Japan. This photo was taken in the Shinjuku district on a rather busy weekend night. I had seen several jaw dropping photos of Tokyo over the years and couldn't wait to see all the amazing neon lights and mega skyscrapers. After finally getting to experience the city in person, it was far more unbelievable than I had ever imagined! You'll have to view it large to fully appreciate all the detail, I can literally stare at this scene for hours. For this shot, I combined 9 bracketed exposures together to bring in all the color and light in the scene. Because it was so bright, I actually had to adjust my exposure balance by 2 steps as well as use my ND filter combined with a long enough exposure to capture all of the traffic motion. I actually waited through 9 lights in order to complete the set and capture all the lights from the cars whizzing by. At one point, a guy started coming toward me and I thought for sure he was security or something official and would ask me to get out of the street. Instead, it was a fairly intoxicated tourist that began dancing in circles in front of me while saying take a picture of me, take a picture of me! As I was in the middle of my set and didn't want to touch my camera, I pretended to take a picture of the man, while laughing histerically. That did the trick and off he went, likely to drink some more sake in this very popular party area :)

The Lights of Japan

The Lights of Japan
Made by Stuck in Customs
One evening I was walking around Roppongi, taking in all the sights. There doesn't seem to be a bad direction to go. Everything was alive and full of life. Getting into this particular position took a few Cirque de Soliel moves that no one was around to appreciate (or warn me against). There is a pedestrian set of stairs that blindly switchbacks its way up an outside drum-tower of sorts. I had a feeling that on top of this little tower would be a good vantage in this particular direction, which I had not seen, but I had mapped out in my brain. I did one of those moves like children do when they work their way up a doorframe -- but I did it in a narrow stairwell. It got me to the top, which was extra-difficult with the tripod! I ended up with a clean view of everything. But then, only then, did I start to wonder how the heck I was going to get back down. I waited for a nice-looking stair-walker to pass by underneath, and then I handed down my camera before performing an unceremonious jump/fall. from the blog www.stuckincustoms.com

Give Me Shibuya!

Give Me Shibuya!
Made by Dan Chui (busy)
5XP HDR shot of frantically busy Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan. This was taken from my hotel room and was fortunate to have such an awesome view! The processing was a bit more difficult given the reflection and dust from outside the window but I'm happy with this result. I really enjoy living/visiting in fast-paced cities and my recent trip to Shibuya only reinforced this belief. The 'scramble crossing' which was featured in such movie classics as: Lost in Translation & Fast and The Furious - Tokyo Drift, is really a sight to behold - an estimated 3k ppl go through the section every minute! Some Shibuya marquees shown include: A part of the scramble crossing in the lower-right, Shibuya 109 department store, Yoyogi Park, Q-Front building, and Center Gai. Processed using Photomatix. Applied Nik software, sharpened the image, and used Noise Ninja in Photoshop. Feel free to leave a comment!

Ginza Crossing

Ginza Crossing

Bonenkai (year end) parties started last week here in Japan. Its customary to pretty much spend every night of the first two weeks in December going out with various groups of friends, co-workers, industry contacts, and pretty much anyone else you've met at one point in your life ;-) The idea is for all friends/contacts to celebrate the end of yet another (hopefully) successful year and wish each other the best of luck for another healthy and (again hopefully) prosperous following year. As a result I've either been seriously intoxicated or seriously hungover every day this month...ugh. Only one more week to go ;-) Also explains why I have to dig back to an old picture to post, as I've been to bleary-eyed to shoot straight otherwise! Non-HDR pic taken with my compact Canon IXY 910 of Ginza crossing of the throngs of people going about their business in Tokyo, Japan.

A Lazy Midweek Afternoon

A Lazy Midweek Afternoon
Made by Jason_Combs
This being my first full winter in Japan, I must say it's pretty easy to cope with after spending my entire life up to this point in dark gray Ohio. This last week has been dark and rainy making me feel like I am in Ohio again. Hopefully next week is back to the usual sunny skies that I have quickly grown accustom to. It's amazing how the sun affects your mood. I use to think that I hated winter because it's so cold, but what I really hated was how dark and drab it gets in the Midwest. It doesn't get as cold here, but it is humid enough to feel like it does, but the sun makes you feel as if it's ok and you don't care at all. That right there made it all worth moving. This is the year in Los Angeles that Blade Runner occurs, but if you come to Tokyo today, you'll get a pretty good feel for the future of cityscapes 10 years hence elsewhere... Had the good fortune to hookup yet again (third time now) with good Flickr bud . His business brings him out this way every month or so, so we've been hooking up regularly. Rather than drag him yet *again* to my Tequila jaunt (Agave!), decided to try something a little different. This time took him to the top of the Atago Hills office building for a 5-star Kaiseki dinner (very traditional style Japanese cuisine), along with 5-star views ;-) Non-HDR shot taken with my trusty point-n-shoot Lumix from our *table* in the corner of the restaurant. This starts at a place in Kiyokawa where homeless can receive free healthcare. It moves to Matsuya Asakusa, the Sumida River and a cat that looked rabid, and on to Shinjuku. The last scene is a night roof shot of the first scene. I improvised the music score. Related: Like any great city, Tokyo is one of contrast! I fly to Zurich Saturday and on to Paris the 9th to work on the Debussy film. I hope my interviews pull through. If not, I will get more location footage and think about how the film will come together. See you in a couple weeks! Happy 4th in the US and much luck to all my friends around the world. Tony

Took the kids to Kidzania here in Tokyo. Place is an indoor attraction that allows kids to pretend they're adults doing adult jobs such as: pilot, doctor, police, electrician, gas station attendend (seen here), etc... A blast for the kids as you can really see their eyes light up when they do the job and even more so when they get *paid* (in Kidzania dollars) for the work rendered! In-camera HDR shot (tripod mounted this time) our boys working as gas station attendants. Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo Midtown

As much as I love shooting with my Pentax K10D it isn't practical to carry to/from work everyday given that its a full-sized semi-pro dSLR camera. So bought a tiny Canon IXY 910IS digital camera as my cameraphone, while handy, doesn't quite cut it as a serious camera for shots around Tokyo. Non-HDR 1xp shot taken from the 36th floor of the ANA hotel, shortly after drinks with some co-workers, looking towards the Tokyo Midtown development on the right and Roppongi Hills on the left (where my earlier shot of the was taken). Tokyo, Japan.

Check out this kid I snapped at Ueno Zoo the other day. Looked about six years old and he is already handling a serious body while manual focusing a 50mm. Nikon probably has this one hooked for life. Can any Nikon users identify the body (you can zoom in to original 24MP size)? To the people linking to this on tumbler saying this will be their future son, pray that your son or daughter finds for themselves something that makes them happy even if it doesn't involve blogging or photography.

Not a particularly easy exposure but it works. Not often I get to visit with a fellow Texan *and* go out and shoot HDR (what is it with Texans and HDR anyways? ;-) Figured it best to take him to the top of the Mori building in Roppongi Hills to capture sunset. 2xp HDR rendered photo (tripod mounted) taken shortly after sunset on the other side of the building (thus seeing the Moonrise).
