Grey Soviet-blocks behind the Iron Curtain? Not in Tirana. When Edi Rama became mayor of Albania's capital he started painting. Why not? He comes from an artist family. There was just one, special thing about it: he used the old Stalinist apartment blocks as canvas. Most buildings are covered up with bright stripes and colourful patterns. In 2004 Rama won the City Mayor of the Year Award. 'It has changed our mindstate,' says a twenty year old inhabitant of Tirana. 'Imagine all the painted buildings in a grey colour. What would it look like? The massive grey blocks will make you desperate. And will remember you of the bad times of this country. We're fresh now.' But not everyone is happy with the decorative politics of Rama. 'Look at that building,' says an older man who's bringing us to a pharmacy. 'I'm living next to it. Do you know what it looks like? Like a discotheque in a coastal village. But we aren't a coastal village. It looks even worse the a discotheque. It looks like a house for prostitutes. The whole city looks like on big red light district.' July 26th, 2009. Tirana, Albania.

Main Square of Tirana, Albania

Main Square of Tirana, Albania

On Thursday the 24th we were off again, this time south to Albania. The Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, Albania reminded us of St. Petersburg, Russia back in 2000: the economy really feels up and coming. I'm willing to bet Tirana will be a major destination for Europeans in just a few years - already it's full of nice restaurants, clubs and bars, waiting for more clients. The Opera building has a nice terrace, while the mosque is definitely worth visiting. It's one of the few that survived the years of hardcore communist dictatorship under Hoxha's rule. Our trip to Tirana was surprisingly easy, it definitely sounds harder when described: we shared a taxi with Australian backpackers from southern Montenegro to the border, walked across and got another taxi to a nearby city for a bus to Tirana.

Today was our first day in Albania. We had been to Kosovo and Macedonia last summer where there are large numbers of ethnic Albanians and we liked them, so we decided to visit the real Albania for this week of May holiday. Tirana was described to us (by an authoritative and well travelled source) as a quirky city and that it certainly is and that is a great part of the enjoyment. You never know what is going to come next, a building fromk teh Italian fascist period, an Ottoman mosque,a modern cafe, an old qebabtore with metal chimney, a Catholic church or an Orthodox one, a brightly coloured block of flats, or an old painted one storey brick building. But everywhere, great energy and a nice feeling given off by the local people. We like Tirana.

Strobist Info: Nikon D80 - Nikkor 18-135 @135mm (on a tripod) F/5.6, S:1/200sec (to freeze the action), ISO 100 Manual Exposure. Light Sources Used: One continuous neon light source (top-left corner behind the subject) and 2 flashes used. Primary flash, on-camera flash @1/128 from at most 50 cm of distance (front of subject). Secondary flash, Nikon SB600, wireless mode @1/32, positioned left bottom corner of the subject. You can see it reflected on the glass. :) Both flashes controlled on commander mode in camera. A white sheet of paper was placed under the subject (the glass), for more light reflection. All action was triggered by a wireless remote controller. :) Had lots of fun (which I think is necessary) dropping & shooting. :))

When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own. ~ John Berger ~ Become a fan in FB :) Eduina Jaupi -Photography- on Facebook ***PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS NOT AWARDS! i will Delete picture only comments!

Yes, already time to say goodbye to Tirana and Albania. We will be sad to leave having got into the Albanian groove over the past week and we almost feel at home back here in Tirana with our friends at the Villa Tafaj , not to mention new friends like this bus conductor earlier today... Lots of photos to sort through and upload in the days and weeks ahead. Falimanderit, Albania/Shqiperia for giving us such a warm welcome!

Edi Rama, the mayor of Tirana, has made an amazing difference to the city - by subsidizing paint and ancouraging people/housing corporations to paint their apartment blocks. He is an amazing man, who was interviewed by Michael Palin in his New Europe series on BBC. There is a very interesting article about him on this link: www.tirana.gov.al/?cid=2,58,413

Recycling in Albania

Recycling in Albania
Made by tojeto
This picture is taken in the city hall of Tirana. Tirana is the capital of Albania, a country in the midst of Europe but very unknown to Europeands. The boxes are meant for recycling. In most other places in Albania recycling works differently: people simply throw away things and others collect them in the streets. The three boxes shown here seem to be a more colorful and more efficient way, though...

Semisonic - Secret Smile This morning I got to this place near Tirana Lake with my daughter Jora. As allways she started playing at the kids corner. I have to admit that she is my favorite model so I started shooting . . and then she offered me this beautiful smile. This smile always disarms me when I am angry with her :-)

The Enver Hoxha Pyramid in Tirana, Albania

The Enver Hoxha Pyramid in Tirana, Albania
Made by lassi.kurkijarvi
This shocking structure was designed by the daughter and son-in-law of Enver Hoxha, Albania's communist dictator. It was supposed to end up a museum about his legacy, but now it's a conference centre and party venue. Later we saw a few young people sliding down the walls and learned that it's a common pastime. Nice to see something good come out of this monument to totalitarian history.

Placebo This one gives me an impression of cold. Feels like the light refracted through the leaves creates a surreal and dreamy feeling. One of those moment when you need someone to hold and cover you, in need of warmth Placebo music seems to fit perfect for me

Apartments in Tirana, Albania

To give the formerly drab city a makeover, the mayor, Edi Rama, had many of the buildings painted in bright colours. Artists and architects from around Europe were brought in to create the designs. New buildings such as this one were also brightly coloured to make the city more attractive.
