L'abbaye de Timoleague a été fondée par l'ordre franciscain en 1240. Elle a été construite sur les fondations d'un monastère fondé par Saint Molaga au 6ème siècle, agrandie par Donal Glas McCarthy en 1312, et par les patrons irlandais et normands en XVIème siècle. Les moines ont été dispersés par la Réforme, mais y sont retournés en 1604. En 1612 l'abbaye a été sacagée par les soldats anglais qui ont également brisé tous les vitraux. Les moines sont restés dans l'abbaye jusqu'en 1629. Timoleague abbey was founded by the franciscan order in 1240 A.D. The abbey was built on the site of a monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga in the 6th century, extended by Donal Glas McCarthy in 1312, and by Irish and Norman patrons in the 16th century. The monks were dispersed by the Reformation, but returned in 1604. In 1612 the abbey was sacked by English soldiers who also smashed all of the stained glass windows. The friars remained in the abbey until 1629.
