Kiessling's Cafe - Tientsin - 1940
Made by DBHKer
Cnr Racecourse Rd & Cousins Rd, British Concession. Established in 1906 originally as a bakery by the eponymous German, Kiessling's quickly expanded to become a European restaurant and a confectionary shop in the style of a Viennese konditorei or patisserie. Herr Kiessling expanded the business and with his new partner, another German by the name of Bader, Kiessling & Bader's Cafe in the German Concession earned its rightful place in the hearts of Tientsin's foreign community for the excellence of its products and service. White Russian girls staffed the patisserie whilst Chinese waiters attended the restaurant. In 1925, it was described in a guide as a credit to European Tientsin and a source of great pleasure to its inhabitants. Its original premises were located along the main thoroughfare in the German Concession Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse - which was a continuation of Victoria Road from the British Concession to the west. After the end of WWI, possession of the seized German Concession was held by the Americans and the strasse was renamed Woodrow Wilson Street, after the victorious president. In 1933, Bader returned to Germany and whilst Kiessling stayed on in Tienstin, the business was sold to another German Herr Riechel and his newly-arrived Austrian partner Herr Tobin. Despite the sale, such was the goodwill of the Cafe that the name remained and Herr Kiessling continued to receive royalties for the remainder of his life. The success of Kiessling's is evidenced by the construction of these Art-Deco premises in 1940. The architects were the French firm of Hunke & Muller. Notwithstanding warlords, famine, Japanese invasions, earthquakes, Nationalist and communist plots, refugees and warfare in the 1920s-1930s, it appears that Tientsin's inhabitants could not get enough pastries. Visiting patrons included Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Deng Xiaoping and China's last emperor, Pu Yi. Today, Kiessling's specialises in serving Russian and German fare. A contemporary online restaurant review rates Kiessling's:- the restaurants sit in its original beautiful art deco building in the center of town. The second floor is a French restaurant which does buffet-style food, but the third floor is the German restaurant. Admittedly, the staff are somewhat sour and the interior designer appeared to have little imagination, but the food and home-brewed beer more than make up for that. (33 Zhejiang Rd).

St Joseph's Cathedral - Tientsin - 1917
Made by DBHKer
Rue de Marachel Foch, French Concession. Roman Catholicism was introduced to the Chinese at Tientsin by French missionaries and the church has had somewhat of a chequered past in this northern port city and treaty port. In 1870, following reports amongst the local people that French nuns at an Orphan Asylum were selling little girls and cutting out the eyes of the boys to make foreign medicine, a mob rioted, destroyed foreign property and churches and massacred 21 foreigners, including 10 French nuns and an unknown number of Chinese converts; this event became known as the 'Tientsin Massacre'. Even at the time of this church's construction, it aroused controversy; many patriotic movements in the city calls on residents and shopkeepers to boycott currency issued by the French banks in Tientsin to protest what it saw as a foreign building in the city. Indeed, a detachment of French troops were on permanent standby during the construction to guard against trouble-makers and other agitators. Notwithstanding the protests, St Joseph's Cathedral was built in the Romanesque Revival style and features twin domed towers - just visible in my shot. Given the position of the sun at the time, this photo was taken from the side and shows the banded red and yellow brickwork which gives the building its distinctive colour. It remains the focus of Roman Catholic worship in the city and is known locally known as Xikai Church (formerly Hsi Kai Church) or the French Church.

Astor Hotel. --Tianjin, CN, April 29, 2009, 6:11 AM Originally called the Richard Hotel, this building can be traced back to the year 1846. The Astor House Hotel was the first well-known luxury class hotel operated by western businessmen in China as well as in the Far East. Its significance lies in the facts that the first electric light in China was lit here; it was here where the first Chinese telephone was installed; the first stock exchange of China was declared open in this location. The hotel served and accommodated a great many distinguished figures of the world such as former American president Grant in 1879; in 1920, the British Philosopher Bertrand Russell; in 1922, Albert Einstein; in 1931 and 1936, the comedian and actor Charlie Chaplin. China's last emperor Pu Yi also lived in this establishment for a while. This hotel, strategically located and still in operation today, is well-known for its unique style of architecture, which encompasses classic Victorian and Baroque characteristics. Cambridge Rd Residence - Tientsin - 1933
Made by DBHKer
Cambridge Rd, British Concession. As Tientsin flourished after the end of WWI, Western expatriates flocked to take advantage of the business opportunities on offer. To cater for the growing numbers, a new residential suburb was created in the south-west of the British Concession. It was here that the British, other foreign residents and upwardly-mobile Chinese could live in a replica of a London suburb; the streets were either named after British towns (Glasgow, Cardiff, Dunbarton, Douglas) , British rivers (Avon, Tyne, Severn, Clyde) or British colonial cities (Hongkong, Colombo, Sydney, Singapore). It was bound to the south by Race Course Road . This Italianate residence was built by French architects for Jilian warlord Zhang Zuo Xiang (张作相). The sign on the fence tells us in mangled prose that:- (it) was a typical collective western style with rich variety in its form. There is rich decoration and acrhitrave on its facade, presents magnificent appearance, owns the taste of classicalism .....whatever that means.

Bank of Chosen - Tientsin - 1918
Made by DBHKer
Cnr Rue de France & Rue du Consulat, French Concession. Established in 1909 at a time when Korea was under Japanese rule, the Bank of Korea was renamed the Bank of Chosen in 1911 as a Japanese government bank. Like Japan's other major overseas bank, the Yokohama Specie Bank, the Bank of Chosen (朝鲜银行吧) was used by the Japanese to promote Japanese trade interests overseas and in particular in China and Manchuria. The use of what was essentially a colonial bank was an attempt to deflect Chinese animosity towards Japanese increased expansionism and growing hostility in the 1920s and 1930s towards Japan. At its peak, the Bank of Chosen had over 16 branches in northern China and Manchuria. The architects were the French firm of Charrey & Conversy.

Hotel Municipal Francais - Tientsin - 1931
Made by DBHKer
Rue Verdun, French Concession. Housing the Conseil d'Administration Municipale de la Concession Francaise, the Hotel Municipal was at the centre of local government of the French Concession. It was known in English as the French Municipal Council. It is an imposing and impressive structure built on a grand scale with a long facade somehow too large for the narrow road. In fact, the road had earlier been a square or open public; over time this has been reduced to a narrow road. The presence of trees not only obscures the elegant facade but also crowds what is Tientsin's grandest European building. The architect was Frenchman L Mendelssohn.

What can I do for You? / 我可以做什么为您?

The brown wafers in front are called 排叉 (pai cha). In the background you see Jian Bing (煎餅), also a delicious type of street food. A very thin kind of crêpe (often made from mung beans) is spread on a flat iron, heated from underneath by coal. Chopped green onions, cilantro, salt, brown soybean paste, chilli sauce and an egg are spread on top, and a crispy square of fried dough put into the centre. Quickly, the crepe is folded over the dough square, chopped into neat thirds and folded in on itself. The bing is usually served in a piece of rough, absorbent brown paper and eaten immediately.

Imperial Chinese Post Office - Tientsin - 1897
Made by DBHKer
Cnr Rue St Louis & Rue de France, French Concession. The establishment of a national post office for China had been made by Imperial Edict in 1896. In the northern Treaty Port of Tientsin, the Imperial Chinese Post Office competed in its own country with the respective post offices of the British, French, German, Japanese, and Russian Concessions. This is an impressive corner building built of black brick. It is located at the heart of the financial district and at the 'international' crossroads dividing the French Concession from the British one.

Jesuit Mission 崇德堂 in Tianjin
Made by avezink
A few film shots from the fantastic Jesuit Mission in Tianjin get a Christmas release (coincidentally). We were able to find this building thanks to and advice from Michael Rank -- thanks, Michael! It was, truly, the only decrepit mansion that still has some spirit. Nearby, as far as the eye can see up and down Jiefang Lu (lined with grand architecture not unlike our Shanghai Bund) the buildings were being gutted. Shot with my cranky Moskva-5 and Ektachrome E100VS slide film.

Tianjin

Tianjin is one of the six biggest cities in China and a prime engine in the Chinese economic miracle. It is a hypermodern skyscraper-studded city, and the historical districts are largely composed of European concessions from the late 19th/early 20th century. The statue is on a recent bridge leading to the Italian section, supposedly modelled on a Parisian bridge, though with the statues having Oriental features.

You Tiao / 油条
Made by hschenk
You Tiao (油条) is, in my opinion, one of the best chinese foods. It's one a long, golden-brown, deep fried strip of dough in Chinese cuisine and other East and Southeast Asian cuisines and is usually eaten for breakfast. Conventionally, youtiao are lightly salted and made so they can be torn lengthwise in two. Youtiao are normally eaten as an accompaniment for rice congee or soy milk.

Jesuit Mission 崇德堂 in Tianjin
Made by avezink
Tianjin government has put plaques on many distinguished old buildings, but the plaques are painfully uninformative. Even the year of construction is never stated! All you can find from looking at them is whether the building is under the ordinary protection or very important protection. Jesuit Mission got the ordinary.
