The Three Gorges Dam (Simplified Chinese: ¿¡§; Traditional Chinese: ·½§©; pinyin: Chángjiang Sanxiá da ba) spans the Yangtze River at Sandouping, Yichang, Hubei province, China. Construction began in 1994. It will be the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, more than five times the size of the Hoover Dam. The reservoir began filling on June 1, 2003, and will occupy the present position of the scenic Three Gorges area, between the cities of Yichang, Hubei; and Fuling, Chongqing. Structural work was finished on May 20, 2006, nine months ahead of schedule^. However, several generators still have to be installed and the dam is not expected to become fully operational until 2009. Yangtze Tourist Boat

Anchored next to the typical ferry boat in the adjacent photo, this is an example of the tourist boats running up and down the Yangtze River between at least Yichang and Chongqing - they may have gone further in either or both directions, but I didn't! Air-conditioned throughout and only for tourists, we luckily did not have one of these - we felt as though we were closer to the real China by travelling the river on similar transport to the locals, not isolated in our floating ivory palace - although I suspect our accommodations were considerably smarter than those available to most of the locals on our boat! This vessel is at anchor because all traffic was stopped on the Yangtze due to the flooding then occurring. We passed by in order to offload us so that we could continue our trip to Chongqing by road.

We were told by our tour guide that these markings on the river bank indicate how much the Yangtze is in flood. I assume that the Arabic numerals indicate feet, not metres. Even so, 40 feet above flood level is quite a lot of water - and it was rising, because we saw peasants up to waist-deep in the water at some points along the river, picking the crops before they lost them entirely to the waters. Rather odd to be holidaying with cameras on a river in flood, watching the locals trying to rescue whatever they could.....

Somewhere in the vicinity of the Three Gorges, we pulled in to this village for a transfer of passengers and cargo. Note the jury-rigged pontoon arrangement between the barge and the shore as a result of the floods and subsequent high levels - presumably there are submerged bits between the barge and the shore that preclude getting in any closer.
