Thessaloniki, (Greek: THessaloni'ky), is Greece's second-largest city and the capital of the Greek region of Macedonia. In writing, it sometimes abbreviated "Thes/niki". Thessaloniki is commonly called the 'Suprwteu%ousa' 'Symprotevousa' (lit. co-capital) of Greece since the National Schism, due to both its long history and its strategic geographic and economic importance. More formally it is known as the "Capital of Cultural Affairs". According to official data, the Thessaloniki urban area curves round the Thermaic Gulf for approximately 17 km; it comprises 13 municipalities and according to the 2001 census it has a population of 809,457. The Thessaloniki prefecture has a population of 1,099,598 (2005). The White Tower of Thessaloniki; the city's landmark The White Tower of Thessaloniki; the city's landmark

The northernmost Byzantine walls of the city and parts of the western walls are still standing, as is the city's symbol - the White Tower, one of the 16th c. AD fortified towers - which is the only surviving tower on the seafront. The rest of the walls are in the picturesque old town (Upper Town) which offers a spectacular view over the bay, especially in the late afternoon. Take a walk along the enormous seafront promenade (about 12 km altogether) with views of the amphitheatrically-built city. See the Archaeological Museum, the new award-winning Museum of Byzantine Culture (2005 - the best Museum of Europe), the Roman Forum excavations. Visit the upper town for its traditional old houses, small cobbled streets, Byzantine citadel, the Eptapyrgion fort.

The very lively and youth-oriented international film festival is held in November, the International Trade Fair in September.

On no account should you miss the Byzantine churches built between the 5th and 14th century ACE, such as St Demetrios, (7th c. ACE) and Agia Sophia (Holy Wisdome, 9th c. ACE), and many lovely smaller ones in the upper town (St Nicolaos Orfanos is particularly worth a look for its frescoes), which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of them, the Rotonda, started life as a Roman temple of Zeus, built by ceasar Galerius, and is almost as old as the Pantheon in Rome. Next to the Rotonda, see the Arch of Triumph of Galerius and the ruins of his palace.

The city is also known as "the mother of Israel", due to the once flourishing jewish community here, which existed from the Roman period and grew after the Ottoman Empire took in the refugees from Spain ("Sephardis), until World War II when most of the city's Jews were transported to Auschwitz, never to return. However, there are still two Synagogues, and you can see the Jewish Museum.

Also interesting are the Turkish public baths, the Bezesteni (Ottoman closed market for jewellery and precious materials) the Alatza Imaret (Ottoman poorhouse) and Hamza Bey Camii (both restored and used for exhibitions).

The traditional central food market, with hundreds of stalls selling meat, fish, fruit, vegetables (sometimes cheek-by-jowl, an unnerving experience for North Americans), cheap clothes and shoes, flowers, herbs and spices, between Aristotelis Square and Venizelou street.

Aristotelis Square-the biggest of the city-and the promenade with its cafes and restaurants.

In The Summertime

In The Summertime
Made by andzer
These days we have a heat wave in Greece. Temperature is 4-5 Celsius over normal. Even during the night we have 30-33 Celsius. Not easy to sleep.. So, in this case, I think the best for me is to get my camera and go by the sea to shot something interesting. Here I am. During this capture and some others (I'll upload them next days) I am thinking this old Mungo Jerry's song. ....... chchchchchchchc chchchchchcchchchc chch In the summertime when the weather is hot You can stretch right up and touch the sky When the weather's fine You got women, you got women on your mind Have a drink, have a drive Go out and see what you can find If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal If her daddy's poor just do what you feel Speed along the lane Do a ton or a ton an' twenty-five When the sun goes down You can make it, make it good in a lay-by We're no threat, people We're not dirty, we're not mean We love everybody but we do as we please When the weather's fine We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea We're always happy Life's for livin' yeah, that's our philosophy Sing along with us Dee dee dee-dee dee Dah dah dah-dah dah Yeah we're hap-happy ........ After a winter sunset

After a winter sunset

(1024x675) Just after sunset.. HDR from 3 long exposures, shot with Canon EOS 400D with Sigma 10-20mm, mild tonemapping settings. 30 seconds exposure (0EV). As the note says, the stones are lit by a floodlight. I am looking forward for a windy day to get some long exposure shots there. Considering where I live it will probably happen.. next winter! However, I have doubts for this because in the computer I edited it it seemed more colour saturated but in this one the stones were almost gray, so I had to saturate it before uploading it and I don't know if I overdid it. Tell me if it looks oversaturated. Other than that, I don't know if I really like the fact that the stones are overlit.. I like the paradox effect of it though.. I've been at this place many times lately and have posted many shots from there. It's really a place with many interesting things to shoot and I don't want to try capture all of it in one time. So today I passed and took some shots of these two boats. Initially I posted a 0EV shot blended with a -2EV (almost the same composition with this one) because I didn't like the HDR produced from that one, but then I tried to make a HDR from another five exposures and liked it more. Actually it has become one of my favourites. 5 exposure HDR, Canon EOS 400D and Sigma 10-20mm. I'm always worried not to overdo HDR and I know I have done it in the past (I would have deleted some of my photos if some people didn't mark them as favourites) so please tell me if I do it again.
