At this point, all drainage from The Basin is concentrated into this streambed, and here it falls sharply and makes a right-angle turn toward the left to continue in the narrow ravine another third of a mile to the final drop-off at The Window. I have now walked my promised 1 1/2 hours, and, although I yearn to go further, I must retrace my steps, hoping to make it back to camp within the alotted four hours. Flickr slows you down considerably. I am going to insert a couple of archival shots in order to pretend that this journey ended at the window, but this is actually the end of Willie's Birthday Window Trail Trek. The record of return to camp will be posted tomorrow, not tonight.

Birthday Trip 4-08 Pieces Of Chisos On Their Journey To The Sea

Everything in the Basin will someday pass through this narrow passageway. Everything is temporary. The ancient limestone was here long before The Chisos, and will reach the sea before them, but the mountains themselves will someday be gone through this gap. Afterward, The Earth will shrug, and something new will be here for awhile. I have started retracing my steps back to camp, now, but somehow it feels as if I'll have as much to see of what I've already passed as I saw on the way down. It will be a long way back, for a Flickr.

A small creek plunges 200 feet onto the top of an alluvial fan at this point. The hike back to Chisos Mountain lodge gains 1000 feet in elevation.
