Early Blue Violet / Viola adunca

Early Blue Violet / Viola adunca
Made by annkelliott
A photo from back on June 14th, taken in Weaselhead. Came across this macro image and decided to post it partly because I needed a change of colour on my stream - so much green recently, and I'm not a green person, ha. Sorry all three of my images posted today have far too much blur! These fragrant, bluish-purple flowers are up to 2 cm across. Medicinally, early blue violet was used as a poultice for bruises, and a violet syrup was made to relieve epilepsy, inflamed eyes, insomnia, jaundice, and sore throats. In modern times, violets have been used to colour and flavour medicines. plantwatch.fanweb.ca/plant-information/early-blue-violet Yikes, just after noon and suddenly we have high winds and very heavy rain! Hope it doesn't last too long, as I really should go to the store that is supposed to be building a ground-level deck to cover my entire (very small) back yard. Heard no word back from them and so I will have to go and talk with them. Also desperately need to go and buy a new external hard drive, as I am almost out of room! I always have two on the go, but one caused major computer trouble (i.e. blue screen, etc.) a few months ago and I daren't try plugging it in again. So, must get a new one. Thunder and lightning - going to turn off my computer! Later: for those of you who may have been following the HORNBY ISLAND BALD EAGLE webcam (for the last few months or even the last few years), I've just come across this beautiful little video (created by someone who goes by the name of beans) from YouTube, showing the Hornby Island Bald Eagle family (Mom, Dad, Alexandra and young David) - a delightful tribute to this amazing family, from nest building to egg hatching and wing flapping to a final fledging. Wishing these majestic Eagles well on their salmon fishing that has just started. Watching such a nest will change your life, I can guarantee : ) youtu.be/sgM9-Fg7v1k

Clay-coloured Sparrow / Spizella pallida

Clay-coloured Sparrow / Spizella pallida

This photo was taken on June 7th, in South Glenmore Park. I rarely see one of these common little Clay-coloured Sparrows up close, so we were very lucky that morning. They really are quite a pretty little bird. I have taken so many photos recently, but somehow don't seem to be getting the chance to go through them and pick out more than one or two to post, if that. Today, it's supposed to go up to 32C, and I will be staying home as I need to recover from yesterday's great hike at Plateau Mountain : ) This morning, it's already 30C in my computer room, so I know it will become unbearable later on. Air conditioning would be so nice!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay-colored_Sparrow

View in LARGE I processed this image in 2 tone mapping Artizen HDR using Fattal on the foreground and Lock06 on the sky. This is first time doing this technique as opposed to some of my other work using 2 overlayed tone mapped images. By using this approach it gives me flexibilty to apply which one works best to different spot on the image. And my experience and it never failed me, Lock06 is great with clouds. View in LARGE Lynette and I went for short walk at Weaselhead Park this afternoon. It was a gorgeous day and couldnt resist the +8Deg C for a winter day. A bit sad to see that there is hardly any snow on the grounds. But a couple of days like this is most welcome. At least I can still ride my bike in January, which is quite remarkable. Southern Red-backed Vole

Southern Red-backed Vole

I had never even heard of a Southern Red-backed Vole before seeing this tiny creature, LOL! Saw it when some of us were on the Dawn Chorus (walk) at Weaselhead/South Glenmore Park on 12th June (starting at 3:30 a.m.!). It was sitting on the path, nibbling quite happily on this long Dandelion stalk. It let a Naturalist's hand get to within maybe three or four inches, but then it decided it was time to leave : ) Lighting was awful, so had to use my flash for this - and I really don't like my flash.

Close Encouter of the Moosest Kind - Project 365 Day 160

Day 160 of 365, what do you do when you come face to face with a moose on a bike path in a city park? You take some pictures, of course. Ran into this moose in South Glenmore Park this evening. It looked a little startled when it saw me and wasn't sure which way to go at first. Eventually, it hopped the fence and went into the woods on the Tsuu T'ina Reserve. I've never been this close to a moose out in the open like this. Very cool encounter!

Western Wood Lily (Lilium philadelphicum var. andinum)

Also called Wild Tiger Lily or Chalice-cup Lily. Also, it is an official flower of Saskatchewan province and has been used as delicacy by natives, as well as found place in Chinese folklore. When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other. (Chinese proverb) - this gives it jsutice. Weaselhead Flats

A sunny spring day in Calgary. The snow is still melting but should be gone soon! NYIP Unit 1 - hyperfocal www.nyip.com/courses/dp/ Handheld, may have gotten more sharp if I had removed the CPL and used a tripod. The spindles on the bridge are clearly separated though, so I don't think there was much shakiness due to handheld in this case.

Day 191 of 365, went wandering down in Weaselhead today and found a whole swack of these Round-leaved Orchids. Don't let the picture fool you, these flowers are tiny, tiny! Found a few of these in Griffith Woods recently with some directions and a lot of dumb luck got got some better shots this time. Need to get a macro lens. I'll just add it to the list ;-)

Red Sided Garter Snake

The only thing that can get me this close to a snake is the chance to get a photo! I'm sure this red sided garter snake is just as apprehensive about me as I am about it. But it was a big one and quite a beauty too. Calgary Rowing Club, North Glenmore Park.

A rather similar photo to one I posted awhile ago, but wanted it for my Birds of Alberta 6 set. It is unusual to see a Clay-coloured Sparrow so close, so I was happy for the opportunity. Photographed in South Glenmore Park/Weaselhead on June 7th.

On the Elbow River. I think they have decided to allow the reservoir to fill as it is rare to see the river this high especially at this time of year. Very beautiful and soo much fin for the kayakers and canoe enthusiasts

I don't know the purpose of this bit of fence. It's in the middle of nowhere in Weaselhead Park. It goes across the trail, but you can go around it at either end. At least it's picturesque. Calgary AB

Symphoricarpos sp., probably S. albus. The specimen was a small low growing creeping shrub, don't know how typical is that for this species. Weaselhead Natural Environment Park, Calgary, AB, Canada.
