Rome. The domes of St Peters and the central Synagogue (square 'dome', centre right above the low roof) taken from the area of the Temple of Apollo built by Augustus as a victory temple following Actium and the end of the civil wars. The hill in the centre background is the Janiculum (Gianicolo in Italian). Not one of the “seven” hills, being outside the ancient city to the west (see here). The hill was once a look-out for the ancient city, a small garrison kept watch for approaching enemies and raised a red flag to alert the city is something was spotted. On occasion this process was used to (illegally) disrupt political meetings and elections. If the red flag was seen, all public events had to stop and a defence prepared. A likely loser in a vote was known to raise a flag on the hill to simply to disrupt the vote! The Janiculum was also the site of a fierce defence of the city by Garibaldi in the nineteenth century. The Papal rule of Rome was overturned by Garibaldi but the Pope requested aid from the French whose troops who besieged the city in 1849 forcing Garibaldi to flee. The hill is the site for a Garibaldi monument and a monument (erected in the 1930’s) to those who fell in the battle (inscribed “Roma o Morte” Rome or Death).

Domus Augustana

This part of Domitian's palace was called the Domus Augustana. The emperor Tiberius built a palace to which Nero, Caligula, Trajan, Hadrian, and Septimius Severus made additions. The biggest and richest structure of all was created for Domitian (reigned ad 81–96), whose architect achieved feats of construction engineering not seen before in Rome.

The Palatine Hill is one of the seven hills that surround Rome. The cradle of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, was said to have floated down the Tiber and rested on the Palatine where a she-wolf took care of them. The Palatine was home to the majority of Rome (millions lived side by side in this one area) in the first century BC and was also home to the Emperors of Rome until 330 AD when Constantine moved the Imperial capital to Constantinople and the Palatine was abandoned.

The Palatine Hill is one of the Seven Hills of Rome, the one where legends told that the city was first found, and imperial palaces were laid down. The so called Stadium in the Palace of Domitian shown here on the Hill was actually a garden and occasionally converted hippodrome. We came up the hill seeing walls here and there but really didn't expect this. The Domus Augustana was the home of the emperor, and his home included this petite stadium, which was, it seems, used as a garden, not as a sporting venue. I'm not sure what this building was used for but it's all on a huge scale, even by today's standards. We were in awe.

The dome of San Pietro in Vaticano seen from the Palatino hill. We are back home from our holiday in Rome, where we spent four very intense days, walking through most of the city, visiting museums, acheological sites, churches and palaces. We had of course a couple of shopping sessions along via del Corso and via Condotti.

This stadium looks like a modern Olympic track, and may be even larger. It was not for racing, however -- it was a series of gardens and paths for strolling about. It's difficult to show just how tall those walls are -- those colourful dots to the left are tourists standing at a railing.

View from Mons Palatinus. From here one has a miraculous view over the Roman Forum. The Mons Palatinus is for me the most beautiful from all the seven hills of Rome. For more informations please click here

It just got silly, and a bit frustrating because half the time we had no idea what we were looking at. On the other hand we were left to simply drift in awe at the scale of what we were seeing.

A sample of what the wall coverings would have looked like in the House of Augustus. These were found here, but much of the marble was recycled for use in St. Peter's Basilica.

This photo was taken close in some Roman ruins near the colosseum. As you can see, the trees are pruned quite 'uniquely' and this one happened to stand out a fair bit.

I have no idea what this is. It was big enough that, for a while I thought it was the Circo Massimo, but we found that later.
