A view from the top (or maybe along the ridgeline to the east) of West Spanish Peak (13626 feet) looking to the west southwest at the southern Colorado Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Couldn't ask for a nicer day, clear with very little wind. Made for an enjoyable morning! Excellent 360 degree views from the top. The old Cuchara ski area can be seen in the middle right. Some of the peaks visible here (right to left) are Napoleon Peak (11866 feet), Teddys Peak (12580 feet; it's the peak behind the ski area), Trinchera Peak (13517 feet), Leaning South Peak (13203 feet), Cuatro Peak (13487 feet), Mariquita Peak (13405 feet) and so on. The Sangres (Blood of Christ) thanks to the Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio who upon seeing them in 1719 was impressed with the reddish color of the peaks at sunrise.

Forgot I set up this larger panorama from the top of West Spanish Peak. The same section of the Sangres from the previous picture is on the left. The next set of peaks to the right in the distance are the Blanca Massif. Two 14ers are in there, Ellingwood Point (14042 feet) and Blanca Peak (14345 feet). Blanca is the fourth highest peak in Colorado. To the right of that further in the distance are the peaks to the east of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Down below you might notice some lines of rock, these are some of the Spanish dikes. There are more then 500 of them in the area. Some are very impressive up close.

West Spanish Peak from Cordova Pass, in infrared. This is an amazing mountain. Anyone who crossed I-25 from NM to CO and looked left has seen it, and its sister peak, the East Spanish Peak. They are part of the Sangre De Christo Range, but not near any other mountains. Being set apart, they look massive. The West Peak is tallest at a few hundred feet below 14k. Tree line on these peaks is very low, and the view from the top is breath-taking.

The Spanish Peaks, near Walsenburg, Colorado, are twin peaks that can be seen for miles and were a landmark for early travelers and explorers. This is a photo of West Spanish Peak, 13,625 feet high, taken off Colorado Highway 12.

And an awesome photo. :-) I love living near mountains. And the weather was just perfect! The twin Spanish Peaks are in the background. The other peak is hidden behind the first one but you can just make it out.

My dad took me up to Windwood Ridge for a little photo excursion. It was fun, and I fell in love with the fallen barbed wire. This one is edited just a bit, could you tell?
