“It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.” The annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest was formed to ironically celebrate the worst examples of dark and stormy night writing.
Queen Elizabeth "trooping the colour"

On a Saturday near the Queen's birthday she and her guards ride from Buckingham Palace to some square somewhere, march around, then head back to the palace. This is called trooping the colour for some reason. I didn't know about the event, but happened upon it while wandering London.
