O'ahu - Honolulu - Waikīkī: The Royal Hawaiian
Made by wallyg
The Royal Hawaiian, at 2259 Kalakaua Avenue, was opened on February 1, 1927 by Captain William Matson after his success with the next door. The six-story Pink Palace of the Pacific was built at a cost of $4 million and designed by Warren and Wetmore in Moorish Spanish-revival style. The hotel sits on 14 acres of prime Waikiki beachfront, which once served as a playground for King Kamehameha I, designed by landscape architect R.T. Stevens. Its public rooms, notably the Oceanside Lobby and Recreation Lounge, were redecorated in 1946 by Frances Elkins, the sister of architect David Adler. In 1969, the 17-floor Royal Tower, or Royal Hawaiian Tower Wing, was added. The Pink Lady quickly became an icon of Hawaii's glory days. Its first official registered guest was Princess Abigail Kawananakoa, who would have been queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii had the monarchy survived. Duke Kahanamoku, the legendary Olympic swimmer and popularizer of the sport of surfing, frequented the Royal Hawaiian Hotel restaurants and private beachfront. The hotel served as the Hawaii residence or Western White House of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and boasts the bar that invented the Shirley Temple cocktail. During World War II, the Royal Hawaiian was closed to tourists and leased exclusiely to the United States Navy as a rest and recreation center for the Pacific Fleet. Along with the rest of Matson's Hawaiian properties, the hotel was sold to the Sheraton Corporation in 1959, and then subsequently to Kenji and Masakuni Osano. It is still owned by Kyo-ya Company Limited, the Osano brothers formed subsidiary of Kokusai Kogyo Company Limited, and managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

Built in 1927, this awesome resort hotel also known as the Pink Palace of the West is one of the key landmarks of the Waikiki skyline. Its innovative and beautiful features helped create the style and luxury that would be seen in future resorts all aiding in developing Waikiki (and Waikiki Beach) into a famous and worldwide travel destination. Our hotel was right across the street from this amazing location so I visited it quite frequently at both day and night and was impressed by its beauty, architecture and ambiance. You will no doubt be seeing this resort hotel popping up now and again in several of my images. Thanks for checking this out. Enjoy!

44/365 It's almost coffee time Waikiki! - The fun about being 5 hours behind from your time zone is that I was up at 5am the first morning in Hawaii. It was really 10am for me and I don't usually sleep in at home! So being wide awake, I went for a walk along the Waikiki Beach and stopped along the pier and captured the beautiful lights of the resort city...only a half-hour before sunrise. Oh..and the coffee was great!

Adding this to my faves - not for comp, dof or anything like that because it's not a great shot in many respects. I just love it because having a hotel room right on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu for 3 nights was one of the most fabulous experiences ever. It brings back many happy memories of my first few days as Matt's wife :) Also, learning to surf there was a-mazing!

43/365 Beach Silhouettes - A flurry of activity on Waikiki Beach as the sun sets into the Pacific Ocean. In this shot you can see a photographer shooting a wedding and a few late evening sun bathers. Off in the distance is a sunset cruise right on schedule!

Honeymoon Sunset

This picture was taken exactly 15 years ago, during our honeymoon on the Hawaiian Islands. Back then it still was all analog photography. I'm experimenting with scanning some of my old slides and pictures using my simple, non-sophisticated Canon MP800 printer/scanner. The sunset was seen from the Honolulu - Waikiki beach. Hawaii is a magic place.

Pierson Thal (1911-1985) in the white jacket on the right was the director of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra from 1956 to 1961. Looks like the band included a string bass, drums, cornet, trumpet, and three saxophones. Sure wish I had seen these guys. From an old Ki'i Hawaii postcard.

After spending so much time avoiding the sun because of its harsh lighting in waterfall captures it was cool to be able to use its power to light a scene such as this. Thanks so much for checking this out and all your comments and faves throughout my Hawaii vacation images. Enjoy!

A detail shot of an extraordinary piece of Hawaiiana and a surprise find at the Royal Hawaiian. Several of their paintings (reproductions I believe) were the basis for menu covers aboard the S.S. Lurline of the Matson Lines. A detail from Island Feast.

89 years old. I believe this is the second hotel built in Waikiki after the Moana Surfrider. The Royal will be closed down for renovations in early 08 for 6 months. Over 100 million will be spent to keep her beautiful. What beauty and history!

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel first opened it's doors in 1927 along Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was immediately popular with tourists and dignitaries alike, and it widely credited with putting Waikiki Beach and Hawaii Tourism on the map.
