The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located at 48 N. Rotary Road, Arlington, Virginia 22211 (Map). Its mailing address is "Washington, DC 20301." As a symbol of the US military, "the Pentagon" is often used metonymically to refer to the Department of Defense rather than the building itself.

Where were you on Sept 11, 2001
Made by garyfgarcia
It was a cool morning in Maryland as I left for Washington DC. As an IT contractor I supported the US Department of State and had to visit my clients 1 to 3 times per week. It takes me just shy of an hour to drive from my office in southern Maryland to the office in DC. This particular day was beautiful. The sky was crystal clear. The air was brisk and fresh. I always love this time of the year. As I managed to get through the traffic of the beltway and onto I-395 the first thing that I noticed was a car on fire. The entire front of the car was engulfed. The owner of the car was nearby and safe at that time and there was assistance for her so there was no need to stop. As I came closer to the Department of State I heard on the radio (the volume was very low) something about a fire. I assumed at the time that it was a traffic report about the car burning that I saw on the way in. I parked the car, entered the main lobby and noticed there were a larger than normal group of people watching the ceiling mounted TV. I ask someone what was going on and that is when I noticed the first tower was burning. We did not know that we were under attack at that point. We just thought there had been a terrible accident. Then in just a few moments we were all stunned as we saw on live television the second aircraft fly into the second tower. People began to cry and there was anger in a lot of the men's voices. I turned to a friend of mind and the very first words out of my mouth was Osama Bin Ladin... His response was who? It was not long after that when the Pentagon was hit. The Pentagon was only about half a mile or less from where we were standing at that moment. Eventually the order was sent out to evacuate the building and so we did. One thing I found odd though is that everyone was going to their cars and the parking garage attendants were not letting anyone out until they payed the $14 parking fee. This caused a large backup in the garage as people were trying to get out and get to their homes. Finally I am out of the garage and I notice there is a burning smell like a large fire of burning rubber nearby. It was the smoke from the Pentagon that was drifting over us as we tried to navigate our way out of the city. We didn't know at the time but soon became well aware that there were people who died that morning around 2000 feet from where we were standing just a short time earlier. At the end of the day I find that a friend of mine from the Department of State, her sister worked in the exact area where the aircraft flew into the Pentagon. She was killed. And there is another friend of mine whose father, a retired Navy captain who was very active in our community of southern Maryland, was on the aircraft that flew into the Pentagon. It has been 5 years as of today... But it still seems like it was just yesterday...

For a brief moment chants of Peace, now! from the dozens in cuffs in the parking lot and those who stayed behind the barricade synced up. In unison cries for the end of the war echoed in this far corner of the Pentagon parking lot, drowning out activity of the police officers.

Double exposure of a skull and an old aerial photo of the pentagon in washington. I was hoping that the skull would come out looking more transparent, but I'm still pretty new to making multiple exposures on film.
