Things We See on Our Evening Walks - #6

Things We See on Our Evening Walks - #6

Living in an urban area, it is quite easy to do urban exploration. We came across this massive piece of plumbing during a walk in an old shipping and warehouse district near home. This is a dry standpipe. Its purpose was to provide an easily accessible point for firefighters to hook up their tankers and pumpers to a distribution system that is built into the building. This way, water can get to upper floors quickly without the need to drag and secure heavy hoses up several flights of stairs. Because the built-in piping goes directly up to the floors, there is less resistance due to shorter lengths and fewer bends. Not needing to lay hose keeps the stairways clear for evacuation of building occupants, if necessary. It is common to see Siamese, or twin, standpipes on the sidewalks outside of buildings. This standpipe services a huge warehouse at the former Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, NJ (MOTBY) which required at least six tankers to hook up. From the looks of the burst pipe at the top right, it is no longer in use.

Also known as the Tear of Grief and the Tear Drop Memorial, is a 10-story-high sculpture by Zurab Tsereteli that was given to the United States as an official gift of the Russian government as a memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. It stands on The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor in New Jersey and was dedicated on September 11, 2006 in a ceremony attended by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. The sculpture is in the form of a 100-foot (30 m) tower made of steel and coated in bronze, split with a jagged opening through the middle. Inside the opening hangs a large stainless-steel teardrop, 40 feet (12 m) high, in memory of those whose lives were lost during terrorist attacks in the United States. The eleven sides of the monument's base bear granite name plates, on which are etched the names of those that died in the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The South Cove off New York Harbor in Bayonne has been converted into a bird sanctuary. Several old piers have been left in place. They appear and disappear with the ebb and flow of the tides. I love using my Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter. It allows me to use extremely long exposures which smooth out the highlights on the water into a smooth and silky surface. This removes the visual distraction that the small and choppy little wavelet create and allow the forms of the decaying wood to become the subject of the photo

It's snowing again today. Since I'm still working on the premise that bad weather IS NOT the enemy of photographers, I took my Canon G9 (charged battery AND the digital card this time) and went down to the river walk on New York Harbor to look for something. This small blast of color caught my eye before the city closed the walkway due to snow. Bad weather IS the enemy of the Department of Public Works.

Detail of Zurab Tsereteli's Teardrop in Bayonne, NJ. Officially known as To The Struggle Against World Terrorism - or, by the New York Times as a 10-story monster - or, by a Jersey City artists' organization as “an insensitive, self-aggrandizing piece of pompousness by one of the world’s blatant self-promoters.”

Lady Liberty has been called many things through her existence, but I would like to add another, -Lighthouse of Hope Please note on the far right, the dark building with cranes atop. That's the former Freedom Tower, now called by it's new name, One World Trade Center.

Bayonne, New Jersey is an interesting place. Its one location where the clash between heavy industry and newly formed nature is so stark. In some locations a mere fence is all that divides the two. View on black:

This little guy climbed up a screen door to try to reach me looking out of a second floor window hoping to get a peanut. When he couldn't go up any further, he just clung to the top and looked at me.
