Can you believe it's just a week and a half to the next ? Yeah, me neither. Also, Wu Tang before and Santacon after. Next week is gonna be nuts! It seems mildly egotistical to me to name a photo of myself with that title, but Tip was on when I was filling out the file info and it seemed to fit. Plus I've been staring at photos of my face for the past half hour, so I don't think ego factors into the equation at this point in time. Please don't let me have caffeine and Nyquil together again. Per usual, I'm renting a lens. I know I keep saying that I'm going to stop renting and start buying - and lord knows I've spent enough on rentals to at the very least get that 17-40 I've been eying - but I'm going to the desert. And I don't want to take a brand new lens to the desert. That is a recipe for heartbreak. Anyway, I figured since I have this crazy sharp lens (the beloved TS-E 24mm) and a nifty remote (no, I don't own one of my own. shut up.), why not take a new picture for my icon? Herein lies the problem: half my lighting gear is packed up goodness knows where. That half happens to include my softbox and my umbrella holders. Guess who rigged up a shoot-through with gaffers tape? This girl. So the lighting, no, it wasn't the best. But it was good enough and I had a lot of fun making silly faces for the camera. I should really post a couple of the wholly unprocessed outtakes. And yeah, the noise is crazy bad. Such is ISO 2500. That's just how it goes. I could've shot it slower, sure, but I wanted to stop it down just a wee bit. f/3.5 manual focus self portrait? No thanks. I'd rather be in focus. And I'm actually really pleased with this photo. Usually, like most people, I find something to pick at when I see myself on film, but I mostly like how I look here. My eyebrows are a bit wonky, but they are 95% of the time anyway. There's a slight bit of cheekiness here that is just essential essential. I would not be me without that evil streak. Pluuuus, how rad is my hat thing? Super rad.

Some talk the talk, and don't do jack. Others walk the walk, and don't say jack. This statuesque redhead walks the walk and speaks her mind, eloquently and often, at Change Your Life Ride a Bike . We all want to make the world a healthier place...for ourselves, our friends, our children. Most of us have a list of I would if I could's. Most of us also have a list of but I can't because's. I can't is the biggest personal obstacle between people (as self-determining individuals) and a healthier world. I don't have time. I live too far away from work/school/shopping/friends. I'm not in good-enough shape. I can't afford too. It's too dangerous. My friends will think I'm weird. These are just a few of the more common excuses. Ms. A is a married mother of four. She takes care of her daily transportation needs with this and a couple of other bikes. She gets around the hills of San Francisco just fine. Parking is never a problem. She's saved thousands of dollars on gasoline. Rollin' next to her through the streets of SF was empowering, and worry-free. She's a leader locally, and an inspiration globally. She can and does. Obama said, Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Ms. A is not waiting. She is the change she seeks. I'm honored to call her 'friend.'

Recently I blogged about a new project that I am starting called $2 portraits. The idea is that I will offer $2 to anyone who asks me for money from now on in exchange for their portrait. This afternoon I ran into Charlie when I was shooting graffiti in Clarion Alley in the Mission District. Charlie told me that he was an artist and did a bit of graffiti himself and that he would also make paintings of the same artwork he did out on the street. Charlie told me that he was hungry and asked me if I could help him out with some money. I told Charlie about my $2 Portrait Project and he agreed to post. Charlie originally hails from the Vancouver Islands. He's been in San Francisco about 8 years. Interestingly enough, it turns out that Charlie has a flickrstream under the handle Bad Publicity Magazine. Charlie said that he didn't have a camera right now but that he liked taking photos, especially of his artwork when he did. Charlie told me that he mostly likes shooting a lot of the really edgy stuff out in the Mission -- the prostitutes, the drug addicts. He told me that he might be able to set up some stuff to shoot back at his hotel that would be really interesting. With that Charlie headed on his way and I kept on with shooting the walls of Clarion Alley.

Dustin carelessly flings the change I put in the 'fancy date jar' into the air! Now, I have to rant. I did all sorts of self portraits in my cute new dress, with my equally cute new socks. They all turned out like crap. Why you ask? Well, it's because the Canon RC-5 wireless remote that I bought, especially because the store guys told me it was the only remote that would work with the 5D Mark II, is total crap. It only fired the camera one out of seven tries, 3 ft in front of the camera, and did not activate the auto focus. When it comes to auto focus, Canon is absolute ass. Seriously. This new remote situation makes me very unhappy. If all the Nikon lenses that I like were not $1000 more than the Canon equivalent, I would consider switching. On the other hand, the Photek background holder and the sweet seamless background paper I bought from Adorama are great. So, win some, lose some. Strobist info: Nikon SB600 on 1/4 power shooting through a 45 umbrella camera left, 2ft higher and about 2.5 ft to the right of model, tilted downwards. Nikon SB900 on 1/16 power shooting through a 45 umbrella camera right, head height and 1.5 ft left of the model.

Camera: Spectra 2 Film: Polaroid Image Softtone Hope everyone had a lovely 'Roid Week! I haven't taken a Polaroid self-portrait in a long time, so I figured what the heck why not. It's not the best picture of me ever, but I like that there's a sufficient amount of trouble in my expression. Which is generally pretty accurate. I always look like I'm up to no good. Because I'm usually up to no good. Something about this nuts weather that exacerbates the crazy. I love it. This was my first shot on the Softtone. That stuff is really pretty. I think it's a bit colder, but due to the artificial lights and the flash in this picture, you'd never guess. It's a darn shame that I only have nine shots of the stuff left, but that's how it goes I suppose. I'm not letting myself buy any film until I make a dent in what I've got. This is unfortunate because I really want to stock up on Portra before they do away with what I'm used to... but my bank account will appreciate it. If anyone has one of the folding, type 100 film land cameras they're interested in selling... I kind of need a new one... let me know! I wanted to shoot my Viva (I NEED to shoot my Viva. Heck, my 669 too.), but I just don't trust the rangefinder on my Land 100. It would be a waste to have those shots out of focus. Also, I swear I was properly clothed.

The Day of the Dead is also known in the Mexican culture as El Dia de los Muertos. It is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and the Mexican community living around the United States and Canada.[citation needed] The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November. The 1st of November is also called All Saints' Day, and the 2nd of November is also called All Souls' Day. The traditional mood for this holiday is bright with emphasis on celebrating and honouring the lives of the dead. This is because they think of The Day of the Dead as the continuation of life. They believe that death is not the end, but the beginning of a new stage in life. People who celebrate this think of it as a cultural importance. These people are usually Christians of Native American descendants whose ancestors introduced indigenous ideas of life after death. Although this is dedicated to the dead, the original festival was dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl (also known as ‘The Lady of the Dead’), but in English she is called Catrina. On the first day of the festival, the people honour dead children and infants, where as adults who have died were honoured on the second day. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead

Camera: Spectra 2 Film: PZ 600 One of the things that makes me sad about the demise of relatively inexpensive instant film is that it's become near exclusively the domain of artists. Not that there's a problem with art polaroids - in fact, I quite love them - but there is a problem with the death of the quotidian polaroid. I want to shoot Polaroids the way my grandma always did, just basic documentary this is what I did today, this is what I got for Christmas, this is who came over, this is my birthday cake 'Roids. The Polaroids of my childhood. I recently moved and one of the things that really struck me when my apartment was super empty (it's still fairly empty) was the stark minimalism of it all. There were a lot of fairly monochromatic scenes. One black dress in the closet, one pair of black shoes on the shelf... I figured it would be a good time to give the PZ600 another go. And now I love that film. My apartment is the perfect temperature for pretty tones. And that contrast is beautiful. If only I had a better Spectra camera! I took five 'roids one day. Then, a couple days later my eye was drawn to this shot. It's silly, but I quite like it for whatever reason. There's something comforting about it. Even though that radiator is a noisy little pest sometimes.

93/365. When will the aliens come...? I have a feeling it's becoming habit to go outside and shoot long portraits at 24th & Mission just for the livliness, outsideness, and general props that aren't in my livingroom (for instance, this bench). It took no more than 1 minute to take this shot, but about 5 minutes of setup, and 3 minutes of tear down. I shot it once without a gel just to see if it was ok (it wasn't)... the rest... well... you techies can read the rest of the jargain. Happy Friday everyone! Let's get our drinky on for the weekend. Cheers. strobist info: Nikon SB-900 @ 1/4 thur 0.5 CTO gel into 45 satin umbrella about 6' subject right. my eyes are staring directly into it. Triggered via PW2's. camera info: Nikon D700 | 200mm(ƒ/2.0G) | ƒ/2.0 | ISO ISO 400 | 1/40S VR-normal — tripoded (yeah, I know you're not supposed to put VR on when it's tripoded... but this lens apparently has tripod detection). camera to subject distance ~ 40' - spot focus to achieve focus — triggered via radio remote.

This is one of three of my photos that is going to be used in a group show that has it’s opening night reception this Wednesday, Aug 18 from 7-11 pm at 1270 Valencia St @ 24th. The show is called 200 Yards and it is a photography experiment conceived of and presented by Lightbox SF. And it’s concept is really perfect for me! First they picked a venue, Heart Wine Bar/Restaurant/Gallery. Then they put out a call to photographers to explore a 200 yard radius from the venue's location and take pictures of whatever catches their eye. Each photographer then selected their best photos, up to 10, and submitted them for possible inclusion in a photo exhibit held at the originally selected center point. The idea behind the project is to expose local photographers, the little details that make each block of San Francisco unique, as well as the merchants that give each neighborhood its character.

The San Francisco Cirkus Shoot-out

A fantastic group of flickr photogs from all over the country met today for the San Francisco Cirkus Shoot-out set up by . Not only did she plan the tour and the location for the happy hour afterwards but also by some magic she managed to pull off a beautiful and sunny day right during summer in San Francisco. A big thanks to her for making this all happen. The event started at the Dolores park and we hang out there for while enjoying the nice weather. At about 5 pm the active part of the walk began leading us through San Francisco's Mission District with many interesting alleys and great graffiti. The walk ended with a happy hour at the Phoenix Irish pub. I have tagged everybody I know in this group shot. Please feel free to add yourself or for that matter anybody you know and hasn't been added yet.

Little kids are pretty easy to direct. They take playing very seriously and if you were into playing pretend when you were little, you can use all the situations you put yourself in to have the kids act. This set is of the Rohe's. and I did a multiple location lighting portrait shoot with them in the city. We trade off being camera assistant. Dustin did the full family portraits and set ups the adults wanted. After returning to our apartment, the girls changed clothes I did the 'running, skipping, jumping and screaming photos' I had promised the girls before we left. I don't remember any of my strobist info for these shots, but we discovered you have to have a mobile light stand to follow kids, so it's best if there are two of you. :)

I usually dance in the living room when I get home from work as I clean and pet the cat. There are few times I think it inappropriate to break into dancing. :) I wanted to make a red hot 80's movie mood with some blue-ish hues on my skin to pay homage to my Betsey Johnson skirt. She's been bringing back some of her vintage line that I love (most of my cardigans). I'm also wearing another camisole I got at Etsy. See it bigger. Model: Toshia A behind-the-scene look (no pun intendended :-)) at the Lilac Alley photoshoot. This was actually set, but after I finished packing up my lighting gears I decided to take some candid behind-the-scene shots. Taken using natural light. Check out Ed's stream to see how it looks like with the lights on. It'll show you how you can use lights to turn daytime into night. BTW, the title is probably something that only my Filipino friends would understand. It is the name of a dessert item in a popular Filipino fastfood chain called Jollibee. Somehow the colors of the murals reminds me of the packaging for Peach Mango Pie... :-))

Poverty In The First World

Streets Of San Francisco Series - Lower Mission - No. 1 Taken one breezy Saturday afternoon in the Lower Mission district. So is poverty relative? Does it mean that poor people in the first world are better off than the poor in the third world? From the looks of despair, desperation and helplessness they seem to be the same... I'm starting a series on my initial attempts at street photography. Most of my photos were taken in San Francisco so it creates a nice contrast to the many scenic shots that I have in my stream. The images are different, the aesthetics are almost non-existent and I'm basically clueless but hopefully I can learn and improve on it.

I had one on order at Amazon, but wanted to take it camping this weekend so I found it locally. In other news, I'll have a brand new Canon S90 (from Amazon) for sale on Monday! Amazon is out of stock, and not many places have it yet. If you're in SF and want it immediately, sans sales tax, lemme know.

That's the name of this absolutely delectable Schwarzbier from a — no kidding — one man operation called Moonlight Brewing Co. If you're in the Bay Area, do yourself a favor and support them by buying a round or two. :) The bar in which this was taken is called The Monk's Kettle, a wonderful beer bar in the Mission District. Easily could have spent my entire vacation just relaxing in there. Ha.
