day138: Disney 5K
Made by Kitzzy
Today was my 2nd 5k and W5D3. I treated this as another workout day and began the race walking very briskly for 5 minutes. The truth is, I was itching to run but wanted to pace myself so I could run to the finish line. The 20 minute run went great. I started slowly and sped up towards the end, but not too much because I knew I still would have over a mile to go after I finished the 20 minutes. I was going to keep running until the 2 mile marker, but I did not know quite where it was (it was about .1 miles from where I started walking). I am kinda kicking myself for this because if I had just slowed down to a slower jog instead of walking, I am sure I could have run the entire thing. After catching my breath for a song or two, I ran for another song then walked a bit more, then ran about half a mile to the finish line. Once I could see the clock, I gave it my all and started sprinting. As I was nearing the finish line, the clock was quickly turning to 43 and I pushed even harder to try to beat it (I missed it by 2 seconds) then I stopped and I got this rush of feeling over me as I struggled to catch my breath. I felt like I was going to cry--you know that feeling you get when you are crying so much you can barely breath? It was that kind of feeling minus the tears. I estimate I ran at least 1.5 miles straight (during the 20 minute run) and a total of at least 2 miles, maybe more. Not too bad considering 6 weeks I could barely run more than a minute. I can't wait until I get my forerunner watch so I can know exactly how far I run. I improved my time greatly and finished under 42 minutes, for a pace of 13.4 min/mile. I will definitely aim to run the entire time at the next 5k in 3 weeks and finish under 40 minutes. Running at Disney was very cool because I knew the area and could easily see my progress. They even had music blasting so I could have done without my ipod, and we got a cool and finisher's medal. I definitely want to do the Race for the Taste 10k in October. Spiral Gardens
Made by Ray Horwath (Catching up on comments)
One of the many vertical growing techniques used in the Production Greenhouse in the Land Pavilion in Epcot's Future World. A very interesting ride for persons who garden. Living with the Land - a gentle 14-minute boat ride through unique indoor plant growing areas. An introduction shows tropic, desert and prairie biomes that existed before humans arrived. The automated narration explains all about the four greenhouses and the aquaculture facility. The boat glides on into The Land’s experimental growing areas: *The Tropics Greenhouse - crops such as rice, sugar cane, peanuts, cacao, and bananas are usually grown under the 60-foot dome. These crops can be found in Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America and the southern United States. * The Aquacell - crops include fish, alligators, catfish, tilapia, sunshine bass and American eel. *The Temperate Greenhouse - featuring the concepts and technologies of sustainable agriculture, including intercropping, integrated pest management and specialized irrigation systems that reduce waste and increase crop production. *The Production Greenhouse - where tons of tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and other vegetables are grown for use in The Land’s Garden Grill Restaurant and other Epcot restaurants. Land scientists utilize growing systems that are kinder to the environment and improve productivity. *The Creative House , showing imaginative ways to grow crops -- without soil, hanging in the air, even on a space station. USDA scientists currently are working at The Land to develop fruit with a longer shelf life. allears.net/tp/ep/e_land.htm

(COUNTDOWN! 11 MORE DAYS TIL DISNEY!!!!) When I went back to WDW for one day in Dec (my best friend and I have the weekday select pass...made a lot of sense at the time, esp since I almost refuse to go on weekends and it was 10 bucks more than a 3 day pass...and she had school up until the last day before the first seasonal BLACKOUT DATE...so we drove up thursday and really only got to experience the parks on Friday), I decided to set a little mission for myself...to not leave each pavillion/country in epcot before taking a predetermined amount of GOOD photos. See, on the other trips I was doing mostly casual shooting. Don't get me wrong, I got a lot of great shots...but I feel I didn't push or challenge myself at all. So the first test of this was The Land. As much as I love this pavilion, there sure wasn't a lot to photograph...at least, there ARE many things to photograph, but nothing was really catching my eye-fancy as something that would be an insanely amazing photograph. In the end I snagged maybe 2 or 3 nice shots, this being one of them. I tried to work with the balloons and the entire ceiling in general, but it was not yielding anything I was immediately in love with. But I like this one =]

I can't make a sound in your sundrenched world (Living with the Land, Epcot)

Everytime I go on this ride, I have my camera ready in the dark tunnel that preceeds this scene. I've mentioned it before, but the curtain rolling up and the doors opening, and flowing into this scene, is one of my top 3 Disney moments. It feels very similar to that moment in Jurassic Park, when they first see the dinos. It's such a beautiful scene, and one of the best examples of Imagineering. Needless to say, I usually end up with a lot of the same shot. You are in a boat that runs along a fixed track, so the shot options aren't very varied. This past trip though, the curtains and door stayed open after the boat in front of us, so I was able to get the proper exposure ready, and was also able to shoot earlier than I usually can, so I was able to capture a more wide angle shot. This, combined with my processing, makes this my favorite of my 3 LWTL shots posted so far. The first one (the other wide angle shot below) was my favorite for a long time, but I prefer the more 'old time' vintage feel of this one. What do you all think?

Lettuce
Made by Scott Hanko
String Greenhouse (formerly the Production Greenhouse) - This greenhouse focuses on innovative high-density techniques, such as Nutrient film technique. It also shows off vertical growing techniques, in which plants are grown on specialized trellises which cause the herbaceous plants to approximate the shape and structure of trees. One of the most famous examples of these trees is The Land's tomato tree, which produced over 32,000 tomatoes in a 16-month period. It was recognized by Guinness World Records as both the largest and most productive tomato plant in the world. Other crops include eggplant, peppers, winged bean, lettuce and snake gourd. Furthermore, cucumbers and pumpkins are grown in the shape of Mickey Mouse through the use of special molds. Much of the produce grown in the String Greenhouse is used in The Garden Grill and Sunshine Seasons, both restaurants in The Land pavilion. In total, over 30 tons of produce are harvested from The Land each year.. The Land Pavilion Walt Disney World EPCOT Orlando Fl.

Living ain't easy, with eyes closed... (Living With the Land, EPCOT)

Since my first trip back to WDW 3 years ago after a looong hiatus, I've always felt compelled to shoot this shot. Well, not this shot persay...but to shoot into the greenhouse as your boat leaves the dark tunnel. I already have a pretty sweet wide shot of it, but I am alway shooting like 20 shots just in these first 20 seconds. Unfortunately, they all end up looking the same, and until this one I had not managed to recapture the magic of the first shot. Here though I liked the angle but not the exposure I had. This is an area that BEGS for HDR normally, but I decided to go for an older, weird processing. Makes it feel like this shot is from the 70s...before this was even open! hah

Kraft's The Land in Epcot, Walt Disney World
Made by SheepGuardingLlama
Once upon a time The Land was not the busiest place in EPCOT but those days appear to be long gone now. To the top left you can see the Garden Grille Room, one of my favourite dining destinations in all of Disney World both then and now. Beneath the stairs you can just see the boats floating past from the Living with the Land ride. In the center is the old fountain that is no longer there having been replaced by increased seating capacity as The Land has gone from being an interesting stop within EPCOT to being its premier destination. The Land is no longer sponsored by Kraft but is now sponsored by Nestle. Olympus 35-RC 35mm RangeFinder

Open your eyes, bliss (The Land, EPCOT)

Inspired by Kristin W.'s recent THELAND, I decided to upload this photo. This is my favorite pavilion in Future World, and one of my favorite places in all of WDW. Living With The Land is either my favorite or 2nd favorite ride, and Soarin is great! All they need to do is update that Lion King Film and we will be in business! I do really miss the umbrella + fountain layout of my youth, and the moving seasons balloons...but it is still quite beautiful. And Seasons is top 3 fast food restaurants on property. I just wish they wouldn't have changed that delicious bread the turkey sandwich used to come on...

Sorin' Entrance
Made by Scott Hanko
The Land Pavilion Sorin' - Based on the popular attraction at Disney's California Adventure, Sorin' over California, this flight simulator takes thrill seekers on a hang glider ride over California. Flying high over the major cities, the Napa valley, the coast, orange groves (complete with orange grove Costumes | Party Ideas | Kids and Safety | Movies and Music | Scary Stories | More » smell), and eventually Disneyland, riders have the sensation of flying as the movie screen surrounds the hang glider that is suspended in mid air. The Land

I got pretty lucky with this shot. The night I took this there was a private party that was taking over Future World so they had to close down the pavilions early. Sensing a possible photo op, I stalled as long as I could and snapped a few shots on my way out. Seeing The Land Pavilion empty is a pretty rare sight, and since this is my favorite spot in Future World I really love this photo. It was taken in a rush and the composition is pretty plain, but it still holds up as a personal favorite. Thanks for looking!

#18 The Land Pavilion - Sky Shadows
Made by tcwmatt
Here is a colorful yet simple picture taken (by me) of the hot air balloon decorations hanging from the ceiling in The Land Pavilion. It was around 10-ish in the morning, so the sun was perfectly the way you usually don't want it for pictures. But it turned out to be a pretty cool shot. For the post-editing, I simply added to the saturation, blah blah blah. Does anyone even read this? Blah. What do you think? Share your comments! Kitchen Kabaret
Made by Burnsland (Steve Burns)
The finale of the Kitchen Kabaret in The Land at Epcot Center. Sorry for cutting out Mr. Eggz on the right, and the Stars of the Milky Way on the left. Couldn't get everyone in the frame! With all the positive response to my old picture of yesterday, I thought I would look through some more of my old photos to see what other treasures I might find. This one was from July 1989, once again with my Pentax K1000. Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit! Burnsland Blog

The Land Pavilion
Made by -Jamian-
View Large On Black This photo is mainly for the Disney geeks out there because unless you've been here, you can't really appreciate the coolness of a completely deserted Land Pavilion. This has to be one of the most crowded areas in all of Walt Disney World so to see it like this was pretty special. I realize this image won't win any awards for creativity or composition but personally, I love it!

Soarin' from the worst possible seat
Made by CodyWDWfan
For best effect, view large! I got stuck in the worst possible seat for this particular ride on Soarin' - the bottom row all the way to the side. I took a few pictures then just closed my eyes and listened to the awesome music and drank in the smells. Don't worry, I got off and walked right back on to row 1 center :) Walt Disney World Epcot The Land Soarin'

Biodome
Made by Bob Owen
I remember riding this when I was 10. It was the first time that plants seemed remotely interesting to me. In this part of the Living with the Land attraction at Epcot we see a range of crops planted closely together. They are actually being grown in a sterilized sand bed and being feed hydroponically. As a young boy, I imagined myself in a giant space station where we used these techniques to produce our food and clean our air and water.

A Different Sort of Soarin' Picture

All you guys and your fancy super-wide angle lenses just make me furious! Okay, not really, but since I'm yet to aquire a lens capable of doing the audience/screen technique, how 'bout this? Soarin' Over California in Florida in My Toms Almost sounds like a bad country song doesn't it? It's not the greatest picture but hey, you at least get to see my sexy legs! Edible EPCOT

Went on the Behind the Seeds tour on a whim back in December, and boy was it worth it. Very interesting and informative, and you got to see lots of neat things that EPCOT does... like grow herbs and spices and veggies for most of the World Showcase! This was a lettuce greenhouse, where they grow using soilless hydroponics. Between the different colors of lettuce, they put an EPCOT logo, that grows in as the crop grows bigger.

The Land (Mosaic)
Made by Fab05
Sharing one of my Hipstamatic Disney shots......just to explain, the trip I took to WDW in January was a solo trip. Since my family could not attend we played the Where in the World game. I would text a shot and they had to guess where I was. It became quite a competitive game as each day passed. I believe by the end of my trip I had texted over 150 pictures.... Would you have guessed this was the Land building?

Loaded Up & Ready to Go

I'm having a really hard time finding interesting pictures to post from my trip a few weeks ago (even though I took over 3500)! I truly believe I am Disneyed out. I've rented a car for my trip to Orlando next week for the marathon & hope to get to a few other places for pics...maybe even the beach...my favourite place in the world.. :-) Coca-Cola Outpost at Epcot's World Showcase.
