Jardine Matheson & Co - Shanghai - 1922
Made by DBHKer
The Bund, Shanghai. Perhaps the greatest 'hong' of them all, Jardine Matheson was founded by two eponymous Scottish tea exporters who shifted their original tea trade to the more profitable trade of opium importation into China from India. Having established a foothold in China at Canton, it became the impetus for the British acquisition of Hong Kong - where British and foreign merchantmen could trade freely unfettered by inconsistent Chinese governance based upon a well-founded suspicion of foreigners. Jardines (known as 'Ewo' in Chinese) grew to become the dominant trading company in Shanghai, Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports; by the Inter-War years, Jardines were involved in shipping, warehousing, engineering, mining, silk, cotton, insurance and perhaps most importantly, the EWO brewery. The Shanghai headquarters were built to reflect its premier position. The architect was AW Graham-Brown of Stewardson & Spence. The building was officially opened on 15 November 1922 by Sir Sidney Barton, the British Consul-General in Shanghai. It has been described as a grand pile of Edwardian baroque culminating in a 135ft flagpole, with 'dignified columns of solid granite', a bronze and marble staircase, accommodation, 'including bath facilities' for the coolie staff and - ahead of its time - an interdepartmental telephone system. The top two floors were later added.

One of the Bund's main draws is the view over the river towards the Pudong New Area: financial and commercial hub of China. People were literally pushing and shoving to get to the front of several square metres; seemingly oblivious that they could just walk slightly to the left or right and see the exact same thing minus the claustrophobia. The building in the middle is the Oriental Pearl Tower, which you might recognise as the background in Marion Cotillard's Dior campaign. (Shanghai, 2010)

A new part of Shanghai, the Pudong Financial Distrect

Looking at Pudong from the famous Bund. It was raining, temperagture was 30 plus with humidity 90+%. I was sweating like a snowman melting away. But it is good to be in Shanghai, the largest city in China. It is amazing that Pudong was full of steel mills and shipyars just 20 years ago and now it is a brand new modern city!

Having, at this point, never seen the Indiana Jones movies, Lindsay had me watch the opening of Temple of Doom in the hotel to give me a pop culture reference point to work with. (Shanghai, 2010)

The waterfront is lined with all of these beautiful, colonial buildings. This is the China Merchant Bank, and in the background, the green steeple of the (Canadian) Peace Hotel. (Shanghai, 2010)

Our ill-gotten Lonely Planet guide recommended a trip to The Bund: once the home of foreign traders and major banks on the embankments of the Huangpu River. (Shanghai, 2010)

Prior to coming here, I had no idea HSBC stood for Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. The more you know. (Shanghai, 2010)
