The G20 Summit and all its entrails have descended upon Toronto. The meetings occur June 26-27th. A security zone has been established in the heart of the financial district for the protection of participants of the Summit. The estimated cost for security is $1 BILLION. Part of that tab includes barriers such as this one on Front Street outside the Royal York Hotel. On a normal day - Front Street is bustling with office workers, pedestrians, tourists and vehicles. Not this week. Many people who work in this area have taken an early summer vacation and many more will just not show up to work at the end of this week when special ID will be needed to enter the penitentiary. a G20 security view

A few weeks ago, Maria and I had afternoon tea at the Fairmont Royal York and then had the chance to explore the rooftop garden at the hotel. The garden (not seen in this photo, but you can imagine it up there, right?) is wonderful, full of all sorts of herbs and vegetables — and we were allowed to taste all we wanted! (I remember Maria handing me a tasty tomato wrapped in a basil leaf: a bite-sized Caprese salad, sans cheese! So good.) If you get the chance, go visit the garden when you're in Toronto. It's quite wonderful. (Oh, and there's an apiary up there too, so if you like bees, that's another reason to visit.)

The Ghost in You - The Psychedelic Furs // I don't think there were enough people on Front Street to mimic anything like Alexey Titarenko's work, but I do like the sparse repetition of legs to the right. Maybe daylight would probably produce better results, so I'll try this again soon.

The Birdman of Union Station

The Birdman of Union Station

I walked out of Union Station one morning with camera in hand and saw this man walking past me with a big bag of bread crumbs. Not surprisingly the birds had anticipated him and were flocking to get some food. As he started to toss the bread into the crowd of birds, I stood about 6 or 7 feet away snapping a few shots. He seemed oblivious to me and wrapped up in his own world.

The grandest hotel in Toronto, and photographed to death by now I imagine. I'm kind of fond of the dreamlike light I encountered as I passed through, though. And I like deciphering the symbols painted on the roof: a union jack, a Scottish thistle, an Irish harp - and is there a English St. George's cross and a Welsh daffodil or leek there somewhere?

Late in the evening! This is the lobby of the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. It had been a long day working...and then a business dinner...I was antsy to shoot something! I don't often think of shooting the lobbies of the hotels I'm staying in. But this one has some nice lines. Happy long weekend to my friends in Canada and the US!

Going to Union on a Sunday afternoon meant that it was eerily empty. I'm used to seeing the Skywalk (which leads directly from the CN Tower to the station) packed with people - after a Jays game, at rush hour, with tourists, whatever. Instead, there was me and a few random hurrying tourists eager to make their way to the CN Tower.

We stayed at the Royal York for two nights to celebrate our one year anniversary. Great hotel, of course, and I took some pictures inside with the E-P1 and Panasonic 20 mm 1.7. I found this hallway awesome because it was so long, and the repetition was great to look at. Handheld, and no cropping or rotation adjustments.

Visited the rooftop garden at the Fairmont Royal York with Maria today. It was absolutely beautiful, and the tomatoes were very tasty. Oh, and purple basil! twitter.com/vasta/status/20571158540
