Built in 1928 as a settlement house, 143 Avenue B was converted into 17-story doorman condo in 1986, sparking one of the first anti-gentrification protests in the East Village. Young George Gershwin gave his first public concert on the third floor. The basement hosted a splinter group of the Black Panthers when they turned fire hoses on the electrical system as a protest, largely destroying the building's systems and causing it to be condemned. Resident Iggy Pop wrote Avenue B here. National Register #86000486 (1986)
