Apothecaries' Hall
Made by L'habitant
The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in Black Friars Lane. Mainly 1670 and 1786, incorporating slight mediaeval remains of Blackfriars' Priory. Courtyard building with main C17 ranges, of 2 storeys, to north and east. South and west ranges, of 3 storeys, mostly late C18. Plain front of pink/yellow brick with stuccoed ground storey and painted entablature etc. Slated roof. Fine central archway of late C17 character. Some red brick dressings etc at either end and 2 secondary entrances. Plain, altered south return with central loop hole. Irregular rear with low building of yellow brick to south-east, probably late C18 or early C19. Elevations to courtyard entirely stuccoed with parapet to slated roof. Hall on 1st floor of east side with central clock, pediment and coat of arms etc and external stair in south-east corner. Ground storey of north range formerly an open colonnade. Rear of entrance archway has late C18 pediment etc. The hall contains plain original panelling and fine, carved woodwork at either end. Large cornice to ceiling which was probably remade in C19. Plain panelling in Court Room also original and large main staircase which has lost some of its enclosing walls. Narrow, panelled room over colonnade. In the courtyard is an early Cl9 large lamp with wrought iron support and painted stone pedestal. Scheduled AM.

Cut my Wings

A Large and Dark view of a dark corner of London. A slight change from locations of late to a darker corner of London and a view which I've seen more times than I'd care to recall but on this particular morning caught my eye. Checking the location on a number of map sources doesn't provide a definitive name, so I'll submit this one to Guess Where London to see if others fare better - the names of the streets in the distance may be familiar, but what's the name of the passageway I'm standing in? Update correctly identified as Burgon Street by funkyuk Although a picture from 2010 the view is quite timeless and it's not hard to imagine that we're in a London from centuries ago - I wonder how far back you'd have to travel in time before the situation today became unrecognisable to someone from the past. This could be Ye Olde London that visitors seek and, as is often the case, they may be surprised at how short a distance from the tourist trail they have to go to take in this view. I'll leave you to watch out for Bill Sykes and Bullseye and to... .. enjoy

What's Shaw's?
Made by Badly Drawn Dad
This building was derelict for several years until in 1997 it was fitted out as an Edwardian bookshop for a scene in the film The Wings of the Dove. Over a few days I saw big floodlights shining in through the windows, people with clipboards, catering vans and suchlike. In the scene two young women go into the shop and march straight to the back where they are not supposed to go because that's where the 'adult literature' is being perused by half a dozen furtive-looking gents, who immediately rush out of the shop. The owner then ejects the giggling ladies. The pub opened soon afterwards. It never was a real bookshop.
