Caroling Voices of Liberty

Before there were popular television A Capella shows like Glee, there was the Voices of Liberty. The Christmas Caroling performed by the group consist of a short informal show in the Rotunda at the American Adventure Pavilion in World Showcase that lasts about 10 minutes. The group sings traditional Christmas songs as well as a Hanukkah medley. It is a low key production that is great in it’s simplicity and the connection between the singers and the audience. Where a lot of shows at the theme parks go for an over-the-top experience, the Voices of Liberty caroling performance is something that you could see at a local holiday performance show with excellent singing. – OrlandoLocalGuide.com This was a real pain in the butt to process. It is a 5 exposure hand held HDR. There is a very high dynamic light contrast in this scene. There is a ton of light coming from the rotunda ceiling and the floor, especially the subject, is dark, comparatively. Since the rotunda ceiling takes up most of the scene, similar to what an overcast sky would do, I believe the metering was tricked. The “proper” exposure was way underexposed and the +2 was probably the proper exposure. The result is that I had to do a whole lot of light fill in post, which everyone knows brings out the noise. I also shot this at ISO 1600 which still resulted in a 1/15 shutter, slow for hand held on the longest exposure. This is due to the slow Sigma 8-16 – it's only drawback as far as I'm concerned. I assume the D3s coupled with the 14-28 f/2.8 will handle this scene much better although it won't go as wide, so... I don't know. Also, due to it being hand held and me not knowing how to properly line things up or get rid of ghosting in HDR, there is sort of some camera shake blur going on here and there. The very first time I saw the American Adventure show, this scene just blew my mind. The engineer in my was absolutely blown away by the fact that Disney's Imagineers had developed a way to have an animatronic character walk up the stairs. My initial reaction was 'you can't do that' but clearly Disney didn't listen to me and I'm very glad they did. It's one of those touches to the story line where Ben is headed up to the attic room where Thomas Jefferson is working on the Declaration of Independence. They could easily have just started the scene with Ben already in the attic room but they put the extra effort to have Ben walk up the stairs. I had the opportunity a couple of years ago to take a backstage tour that included going down inside the backstage area of this attraction to see the infrastructure that makes the show happen. Having seen all of that, it's actually even more amazing what it takes to pull this show off. I've seen it so many times since then that I sometimes forget the astonishing technical achievement this was in 1982. It's just a great moment in a show made up of a string of technical achievements that are even more amazing given how long ago they were developed and implemented.

As much as I love Spaceship Earth, The American Adventure is probably my favorite experience at Epcot, and this scene is my favorite from the attraction. The scene is set on October 29th, 1929 during the Great Depression, when the stock market crash tarnished the golden dreams of millions. The detail and theme of this scene is simply amazing. It looks SO real and it's even raining! Disney Imagineering at it's best... The American Adventure takes guests on a trip through America's history. It is narrated by figures of Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain. The show is presented in a theater-like auditorium, with sets and characters rising out from the stage floor to represent scenes from different historical periods. The characters provide insight into American life of the past through conversations in which they discuss the current events of their time. Periods include the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 (representing American industrialization), and the Great Depression. yeah i know christmas is past, but i took a break so gimmie a break :) this shot was taken at American Adventure's grand lobby. Usually getting to the second floor here is sort of hard to get to unless you know someone in a wheelchair. hiding behind a door disguised as part of the walls lie an elevator which take you to the second floor of the rotunda. when i found that elevator, i pointed it out to joe (aka ) who was closest to me and we headed on up. There were many superb pov's here and the show down below was very nice to see from up above. worth a visit if you are into seeing new things in familiar places. taken with joe's most excellent Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 ultra wide lens.

I've decided that there are too many good Disney photographers out there. When I got back from my first DSLR WDW trip in January and started posting photos, I connected with the Flickr Disney All-Stars (you know who you are) and realized that what I thought were awesome and original photos were either already done or done much more creatively. This shot is a perfect example. I was pretty excited about this one only to have WDWFigment post an arguably better shot here: before I was able to process and post mine (nice shot BTW Tom). I guess I just need to pick up my game for my next trip...

You can't help but enjoy the amazing performances put on regularly by the Voice of Liberty at the American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. The collection of patriotic and traditional American classics create a truly wonderful pre-show for the guests waiting to head upstairs for the main show. The reality is, they are not really a pre-show, but a marquis performance all by themselves. During this particular performance, as I was enjoying them, this one performer who I've heard countless times began to sing and the first thought that came to mind was that I was listening to the 'Voice of an Angel'

See my photos on Flickriver or Google+ Last weekend I ran the Disney Wine and Dine Half marathon for the second straight year. I finished in 1:34:21 which I am fairly happy with. Afterward I met my wife at Epcot and we walked around the Food and Wine Festival. We had a lot of good food and drinks and were able to walk right on all the rides without any lines. This is my favorite shot from that night. I did not have a tripod so I had to make do.

I may have invented these bifocals I'm wearing, but I can assure they are not rose-colored. Mr. Twain, the golden age never was the present age, but with human liberty we can fulfill the promise and meaning of America. To everyone a chance, believed Thomas Wolfe, to all people regardless of their birth, a right to live, to work, to be themselves, and to become whatever their visions can combine to make them. This is the promise of America! Mr. Twain, 'tis easy to see, hard to foresee, but I foresee the American Adventure to continue a long, long time!

This is one of my all time favorite Disney performances. The next time you are in World Showcase take the time to give them a listen. The Voices of Liberty is an eight-member a cappella group that hosts patriotic choral performances in the pavilion rotunda throughout the day, often as a pre-show to the next scheduled performance of the main presentation. I've always loved this Epcot attraction ... makes me so proud to be American. (Though I'm Canadian. And German. And not American in any way, shape or form.) That's the beauty of the presentation, though! It can make anyone feel that being American is truly enviable. I kinda dig this shot of the eagle out front. I was snapping pics wandering around the facade because my family had ditched me, and I didn't want to wander too far afield, just in case they would come back for me. (They did.)

Every time I visit Epcot during the Flower & Garden Festival, I'm always amazed at how quickly the plants have grown. The sunflowers outside the American Adventure have flourished and are now quite tall. I took this photo with my UWA lens, and was able to get quite close while still capturing the entire flower. Yet when I went to edit the image, I decided to crop it significantly to bring more focus to the florets - I love the beautiful pattern created by them.

I like The American Adventure for its grand stage, the way sets rise from the floor and the great audio-animatronics performances. I also like it for the song at the end; the way all the statues come to life in wide dynamic surround sound. This was my first time to Disney with my new Canon 7D. Forgot to turn on RAW. I will be going back to get this one again sometime in the near future.

Part of the American Adventure show, I like this scene because it has a great sense of depth. You feel like you're right there on the docks watching them work on the ships. I also like the LED welding sparks (which I failed to capture). Soon after this, another woman rides an engine part up into the ceiling. A bit over the top, but I still like it.

I love it when the original EPCOT Center logo can make its way into the present-day park. It's such a great embodiment of what the park originally stood for, and seeing it brings back so many great memories. I saw this particular banner was functioning as crowd control for the Candlelight Processional, and couldn't resist stopping to take a picture.
