Terrapin Point (formerly Terrapin Rocks) is an observation area located in Niagara Falls, New York at the northwestern corner of Goat Island, next to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. It is one of two major observation areas to overlook the falls and lower Niagara Gorge on the New York side, the other being Prospect Point further downriver. Before the second half of the 20th century Terrapin Point was a group of rocks on the brink of the falls, disconnected from Goat Island. They were known as the Terrapin Rocks because they resembled giant tortoises.[1] From 1833 into the mid-1880s, Terrapin Rocks was the location of a boardwalk and Terrapin Tower, a lighthouse-type structure that was built over the river, just beyond the lip of the Horseshoe Falls. A series of footbridges connected the boardwalk and tower with Goat Island. The boardwalk, deemed unsafe, was dismantled by 1887. While work was being carried out on the dredging of the upper Niagara River in 1953 to spread the flow of water more evenly along the crest of the Horseshoe Falls, dirt and fill from the dredging was taken over to Terrapin Point, increasing its area and affording visitors views of the cataract not seen before. This area was closed to tourists in 1969, however, due to cracks being found in the rock foundation. Terrapin Point was roped off for visitor safety until 1983, when the United States Army Corps of Engineers blasted away 25,000 tons of unstable rock, added more landfill, and built diversion dams and retaining walls to force the water away from Terrapin Point. Altogether 400 feet (120 m) of the Horseshoe Falls was eliminated, including 100 feet (30 m) on the Canadian side. According to author Ginger Strand, the Horseshoe Falls is now entirely in Canada.[2] Other sources say most of Horseshoe Falls is in Canada.[3] The remaining surface was scaled, and reopened to tourists in September 1983.

nrhp # 66000555- Niagara Reservation- Niagara Falls State Park is located in the City of Niagara Falls, New York in Niagara County. The park contains the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and part of the Canadian Falls. Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States. In 1885, the Niagara appropriations bill was signed into law, creating the Niagara Reservation. New York State Assemblyman Thomas Vincent Welch figured prominently in getting the bill signed, and served as the first Superintendent of the Park from its inception until 1903, 18 years. Renowned landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed the landscape plan for the reservation, which he also helped establish. The Niagara Reservation was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1963. from Wikipedia

Maid of the Mist

I took this a couple of years ago when my wife and I took our Griswoldesque Great American Cross-Country Road trip with her parents. Instead of the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, we drove their Winnebago Adventurer, or the Beast, as we affectionately came to call it, from New Mexico to Massachusetts. It was literally the trip of a lifetime, and one I'll never forget. This was my first time at Niagara Falls, and it was my birthday, so I felt like a kid in a candystore -- and took a lot of photos -- including ones I had overlooked the first time around. This one didn't really catch my eye, because in color it seemed kind of washed out, so I decided to see what I could make of it using Nik Silver Efx Pro. Hope you like the result.

This is the first photo from a trip my wife and I made to western New York. We went to visit my family, attend my 52nd high school reunion (Attica Central High School, Class of 1958), see the beautiful autumn colors, and visit some of the restaurants we'd seen on Food Wars and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. After two smooth flights, from Denver to Chicago, and then to Buffalo, we drove to Niagara Falls. The drive included a stop at Duff's on Sheridan Drive for some amazing wings. Then we visited Goat Island for a close-up view of the American Falls and the Canadian Falls in the distance.

I had a lot of fun photographing these little guys. Niagara seems to be plagued by these birds so there was no shortage of photographic opportunities with them. I took this using my Nikon 18-200mm lens. I've never considered that to be a very fast lens by any stretch of the imagination but it surprised the heck out of me once I started reviewing all the crisp motion it captured.

I didn't know that they did this at Niagara Falls, but the Canadians flood the falls with rotating lights. I shot this from the American side of Horseshoe Falls looking at the Canadian side. What I really liked about this shot was that they mist balanced the colors of the falls within the frame. Made it to Explorer for August 7, 2011 peaked at #494.

Upriver from Goat Island and the Horseshoe Falls, the International Hydro Water Control Dam spans the Niagara River from the Ontario side to Tower Island, an artificial island constructed, as the terminal of the dam, just inside the American border View from the Skylon Tower, Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada

After Sue and I were done taking our photos, I shot a few of the falls themselves. The lights change, so it was fun to see different looks on them. Here I've presented two of my favorites, a multicolored look, as well as a more monochromatic blue rendering.

Shot at Terrapin Point , standing next to the beginning of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls. You can see the tour boat the Maid of the Mist in the mist at the bottom of the picture . It will show you how close it actually comes to the waterfalls itself

This photo was taken while sitting an Niagara Falls. (Yes the Big water fall in New York) I can still hear the water roaring in the background. Most people were shooting the water. I was more interested in the birds that the water attracted.

This is Niagara Falls, Canada as taken from the American side of the falls. I was only able to shoot from the American side because without passports we were forbidden to cross the bridge to the Canadian side. There is no HDR on this one.

Some of the mist getting kicked up from Horseshoe Falls. Niagara Falls, ON is in the background. I have a corrected version of this shot, but it wasn't as dramatic. Occasionally, I think I like the keystone effect on buildings.

One of the Maid of the Mist boats carrying a few hundred tourists in blue ponchos comes perilously close to the Canadian (Horseshoe) falls at Niagara Falls. The tourists on the boat see nothing but mist.

Goat Island is a popular picnic spot at the Niagara Falls. Notice the mangled trees, which collapsed last winter after a storm dumped several feet of snow on the Western New York state area.
