Temple Bar was originally the western entrance to London, at the western end of Fleet Street, separating London and Westminster. The final Bar was designed by Christopher Wren following the Great Fire and was built between 1669 and 1672. In 1880 it was replaced by a single stone pillar, and was re-erected in Theobalds Park, Herts. In 2004 it was returned to London, and was re-erected again, not on its original site, but alongside St Pauls Cathedral.

Sir Christopher Wren’s Temple Bar marked the gateway to the City of London for 200 years. Then it was rebuilt at Theobalds Park, Cheshunt to form a grand entrance to a country estate. Temple Bar at Theobalds Park Today, Temple Bar has been rebuilt at Paternoster Square, opposite St. Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of London.

Now entrance into Paternoster Square, used to be where Fleet Street turns into the Strand, marking the boundary between City of London and Westminster. It was one of the 8 main gateways into the City, and in the 18th Century had the heads of traitors mounted on spikes in the roof.
