Pu'u ohi'a trail

Pu'u ohi'a trail
Made by bohemiangrassi
The first time David, Janelle, and I attempted this hike we all got bug bites. This time we took the bridal party out, but doused everyone with bug spray so the wedding pictures wouldn't be messed up. As you can tell, we completed the hike unscathed and not too tired because we were able to walk to Denny's for a celebratory lunch afterwards! =) All and all, a great time, we hiked through the rain, eluded the wild pigs, and avoided slipping off cliffs with possibilities of serious injury or death. And despite not having the shoes for it, and Ina's 100% prediction of doom and death, I made it through! My chucks are a bit worse for wear, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Getting here was a bit tough since it's really difficult finding the trails unless you knew where you were going, luckily we had some Hawaiian natives with us who showed us the way! The hike wasn't too tough, there are some great scenic shots of Hawaii and it was great getting to know everyone a little bit better. Plus, it helped me justify getting a shake afterwards :) Best viewed in size Large. On the top left corner of this picture, click the magnifying glass all size for best quality.

Katie Tree

Katie Tree
Made by kcmckell
3700KatieTree Tried to have a little fun and asked the roommates to do something typical of them for this shot. Katie's doing exhibitionist yoga, Jeff's gorging on pretzel sticks and Cadbury eggs, Philip is engrossed with his new laptop, and I'm stinky from working out and coveting my motorcycle helmet. This the one I printed, matted, and framed for Katie. See the alternates and here. Strobist: Key: Metz CT-45 into white umbrella aimed at white ceiling near the camera. Fill: SB-28 into silver umbrella on couch camera left, mostly aimed at Jeff. Rim: SB-28 zoomed out and bare behind Katie. Kicker: SB-28 bounced off computer screen in Philip's lap. All the SB's were triggered by CTR-301 radio slaves and the Metz was triggered with a Sonia optical slave. I really would have liked to have killed the light that spilled back into the dining room. Probably ought to have moved the fill light behind the sofa and made it point across the scene instead of into it.

Diamond Head / Waikiki Panorama

Diamond Head / Waikiki Panorama
Made by kekoap
Panorama from Puu Ualakaa off of Round Top Drive above Makiki. Have a look at the to see more detail. From here you can see: Manoa and UH in the foreground on the left; Kahala and Kaimuki in the background on the left; Diamond Head, Moiliili, and Waikiki in the background center; Ala Moana, Kakaako, and a bit of Sand Island toward the right. While I didn't plan this, staring at this photo brings back a lot of memories. Even things I can't actually see in the photo -- like my auntie's place hidden behind the tall round building in Kaimuki, and my high school beyond the bushes in the foreground, and even my old house in Hawaii Kai -- they're all there for me when I look closely. When I took this, it was actually threatening to rain. It drizzled a bit, but the rain mostly stayed in the mountains behind me. For a time, there was a nice rainbow over Manoa but it wasn't really visible from where I set up for the panorama. 17 photos (vertical), tripod. Stitched with Hugin, -m 4096 to avoid swapping during enblend.

Diamond Head & Waikiki - Oahu Hawaii

Diamond Head & Waikiki - Oahu Hawaii
Made by Chad_007
My partner and I hired a couple of scooters and headed up a great winding mountain drive and took this shot and many others from the lookout. You could see from downtown Honolulu (off shot to the right) to Waikiki (the high-rise hotels RHS) to Diamond Head crater (LHS) and beyond. We rode from here around Diamond Head and around the coast to the Kahala Hotel & Resort. WOW! They have their own dolphins! Saw them do some tricks too. www.kahalaresort.com/ Want to stay here one day.

Seven-Legged Cane Spider

Seven-Legged Cane Spider
Made by kcmckell
4122CaneSpider This little guy (just fit inside a pint glass for his trip outside) was hanging out in the sink. He was probably feasting on little gnats and aphids that were digging the scraps from last night. I can't believe Serena didn't scream! This is the second one I've seen in the house, but sadly, not the largest. The species in Hawaii belong to a family known commonly as huntsman spiders. More info on cane spiders on Wikipedia

Car Lights in the Rearview - 1

Car Lights in the Rearview - 1
Made by kcmckell
3905CarLights I've had this shot in my head for a while. Probably ever since I sat on the bike out front of Serena's old place and watched the cars zoom by. I think if I was gonna do this again, I would take more time and try to match the incoming white lights in line with the outgoing red ones. Should be just a change in perspective (made a little bit more difficult by the motorcycle in the way of the tripod!)

HIKING NEAR TANTALUS DRIVE

HIKING NEAR TANTALUS DRIVE
Made by boydbrooks999 n Korea
The drive through the rain forest along the 10 mile Tantalus and Round Top loop is a MUST SEE when you visit Oahu. Even better would be to take one of the many hiking trails and see it up close and personal. Breath taking views, exotic plants and trees, fresh air, and great exercise all within a 5 to 10 minute drive from your Waikiki hotel (traffic permitting).

Tantalus Camera Drop

Tantalus Camera Drop
Made by skabeds
My camera, and supposedly myself, were 1 away from death to get this shot. My camera got blown over when my back was turned. I turned just in time to jump off the wall onto the cliffside of the lookout to catch my tripod by the end of one leg while my camera stopped about an inch off the ground... lens first.

Short Time Lapse Experiment

Short Time Lapse Experiment
Made by JoePhilipson
Experimenting with Time Lapse photography. I'm not too happy with the length and consistency of this one but I have learned much and will be definitely making another attempt elsewhere. My favorite part about this video is the cities transition from day to night. I watch it over and over...
