Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a mile-long (1600 meter) suspension bridge with a main span of 2800 feet (850 m) (the third-largest in the world when it was first built^) that carries Washington State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows of Puget Sound from Tacoma to Gig Harbor, Washington. The first version of the bridge, nicknamed Galloping Gertie, was designed by Clark Eldridge and altered by Leon Moisseiff. In 1940, it became famous for a dramatic wind-induced structural collapse, an event that was caught on motion picture film. The replacement bridge opened in 1950.Top photos chosen by u all:

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, with Mount Rainier behind it. It carried Washington State Route 16 across the Tacoma Narrows of Puget Sound between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. The first bridge, nicknamed Galloping Gertie, was opened to traffic on 1 July 1940, and became famous four months later for a dramatic wind-induced structural collapse that was caught on color motion-picture film. This replacement bridge was designed and rebuilt with open trusses and stiffening struts and openings in the roadway to let wind through. It opened on 14 October 1950, and is 1,822m long — 12m longer than Galloping Gertie. When built, it was the third-largest suspension bridge in the world and is still the fifth-longest in the USA. It was nicknamed Sturdy Gertie, as the oscillations that plagued the previous version had been eliminated. Designed to handle 60,000 vehicles a day, it carried both westbound and eastbound traffic until a new east-bound bridge opened on 15 July 2007.

If the name Tacoma Narrows Bridge sounds familiar to you, then it is probably because of this famous video of the collapse of the original one in the 1940s. They rebuilt it after that, which is the bridge you see on the right above, and now they have built a new one (on the left above) that had a jam-packed grand opening Sunday.
