view large Part of a series of twenty-two warehouses built in 1895 alongside the Kattendijk dock in the old port of Antwerp in an area called 't Eilandje (Little Island). The whole area around the old docks is, for now, quiet and deserted, and there's still a palpable sense of nostalgia in the air, but several historic sites on this precious piece of real-estate have in fact been sold to project developers. The Montevideo warehouses were sold in 2003 to R&S for 3 million euro. Over the next few years, they will be converted into parking lots, offices and fancy lofts. Das ehemalige Hafenviertel von Antwerpen wird „Eilandje“ – Inselchen – genannt, weil es ringsherum von Hafenbecken umgeben ist. Es geht auf den Antwerpener Bodenspekulanten Gilbert van Schoonbeke (16. Jh.) zurück, der planmäßig das erste Stadtviertel außerhalb der Umwallung Antwerpens anlegte. Der Bau der ersten Hafendocks ist Napoleon und Willem I. zu verdanken. Mit der Expansion des Hafens in Richtung Norden in den sechziger Jahren verfielen die alten Hafenanlagen. Nun haben die Stadtplaner das Eilandje wieder entdeckt.

The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is a three-masted barque rigged sail training vessel. It is based in Bergen, Norway and contracted out for various purposes, including serving as a school ship for the Royal Norwegian Navy. The smaller ship is the Thor Heyerdahl - formerly Tinka, Marga Henning, Silke and Minnow , which is a 1930 built motor vessel with auxiliary sails, which now sails under the German flag as a three-masted topsail schooner (three-masted sailing ship) (Wikipedia). Shot when leaving the Antwerp harbour during the Tall Ships Races.

Corner of Braziliëstraat (Brazil Street) and Rijnkaai (Rhine Quay), just north of the Antwerp city centre, in an area called 't Eilandje (Little Island, somewhat comparable with the London Docklands, only much smaller and far less developed). On the left the Montevideo warehouses. The building on the right is called the Shop; it's the former recruiting office for harbour labourers. It was sold in 2003 for 1.2 million euro. Bargain.

09/04/2011; No idea what it is that they saw, but I think its funny and admirable how they can set their minds on 1 little thing in all of the greatness around them. Over here, Antwerp reminded me a bit of . Yet it seems as if the areas along the river in the western parts of Antwerp aren't as accessible as that of Düsseldorf.

Street Theatre in Antwerp by Royal de Luxe. Royal de Luxe is a French mechanical marionette street theatre company. They were founded in 1979 by Jean Luc Courcoult. Based in Nantes, the company has performed in France, Belgium, England, Germany, Iceland, Chile and Australia (Wikipedia). It is already the third time in a row that Antwerp hosts a Giants spectacle.

Het voorwerp van het restauratiedossier is een voormalig pakhuis, gebouwd in 1897, genaamd 'Montevideo' aan het Kattendijkdok te Antwerpen (Eilandje). Het maakte deel uit van de zuidelijke uitbreiding van het Kattendijkdok. Het is genaamd naar zijn vroegere functie; overslag van goederen uit het verre Montevideo, hoofdstad van Uruguay.
