The Church of Our Lady before Týn, Prague
Made by asianfiercetiger
The Church of Our Lady before Týn (Týn Church or just Týn) is a dominant feature of the Old Town of Prague, Czech Republic, and has been the main church of this part of the city since the 14th century. The church's towers are 80 m high and topped by four small spires. In the 11th century, this area was occupied by a Romanesque church, which was built there for foreign merchants coming to the near Týn Courtyard. Later it was replaced by an early Gothic Church of Our Lady in front of Týn in 1256. Construction of the present church began in the 14th century in the late Gothic style under the influence of Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler. By the beginning of the 15th century, construction was almost complete; only the towers, the gable and roof were missing. The church was controlled by Hussites for some time, including John of Rokycan, future archbishop of Prague, who became the church's vicar in 1427. The roof was completed in the 1450s, while the gable and northern tower were completed shortly thereafter during the reign of George of Podebrady. His sculpture was placed on the gable, below a huge golden chalice, the symbol of the Hussites. The southern tower was not completed until 1511, under Matěj Rejsek. In 1626, after the Battle of White Mountain, the sculptures of George of Podebrady and the chalice were removed and replaced by a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, with a giant halo made from by melting down the chalice. In 1679 the church was struck by lightning, and the subsequent fire heavily damaged the old vault, which was later replaced by a lower baroque vault. Renovation works carried out in 1876-1895 were later reversed during extensive exterior renovation works in the years 1973-1995. Interior renovation is still in progress.

Church of Our Lady before Tyn (Týnský chrám)

My apologies to the church. I had to push the lens through an opening in the metal fence to capture this photo before entering the sanctuary and putting the camera away. One of the myriad of signs on the lower left says Do Not Take Pictures. There was also two other 'no camera' signs posted on the fence.. But, hey, there was one gentleman whipping out his point & shoot while standing inside the sanctuary behind the shield of columns sneaking an odd photo here and there. I guess two wrong photographic approaches don't make a right, right? Right! Because of the ravages of time since the twelth century, this is the third reconstruction of the church on this property. So, I can understand why the church is protective of it's interior. But, me being me, I upload this photo for those who may never have the opportunity to visit this beautiful church. Astronomical Clock, Prague

This is the famous astronomical clock in the Old-Town Hall in Prague. Wikipedia: It is also known as the Prague Orloj. The central portion was completed in 1410. The four figures are set in motion at the hour, with Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time. The Twin Towers of Týn
Made by Umberto Luparelli
The church of our Lady in front of Týn (in Czech Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem, Týnský chrám or just Týn) is one of the most preeminent symbols of Prague Gothic style. As well as many other monuments in Prague, this church has a long and eventful history. In the place we see the church with two Gothic towers that dominate the Old town square and all the Old centre of Prague, Ungelt, have stood three churches, each destroyed by the wickedness of times. The interesting thing about the twin towers is that if you take a closer look, they are not at all identical. One of them is in fact a bit more solid and it is said that it represents the stronger side of the family, the man.

The Church of Our Lady Before Týn dominates one side of the Old Town Square in Prague. This powerful looking, Gothic church with a baroque interior can be seen from all over Prague. The church was founded in 1385 during the tumultuous period when the ‘heretic’ Hussites were slaughtered by the ruling Roman Catholics. The Catholic Jesuits then made the church their own by recasting the bell and replacing the Hussites symbolic chalice with a ten-foot figure of Mary nailed between the towers. On the left of the shot, you can see why such a large crowd has gathered - the Astronomical Clock.

The Church of Our Lady Before Týn dominates one side of the Old Town Square in Prague. This powerful looking, Gothic church with a baroque interior can be seen from all over Prague. Impressive during the day, and striking at night lit up against the dark night sky, take a close look at the two spires. They are not symmetrical. This is characteristic of the gothic architecture of the time, which tried to represent both masculine and feminine sides of the world.

The same Tyn our room was looking out on, although we had a view from the back and this is the front view. Construction of the present church began in the 14th century but as early as the 11th century a church stood on that location. It is a pity though that its front is completely locked in by other buildings. You have to go through a passage of one of the front buildings in order to access the church. Trivia : The church's towers are 80 m high.
