Tim
Made by Thomas Hawk
Recently I blogged about a new project that I am starting called $2 portraits. The idea is that I will offer $2 to anyone who asks me for money from now on in exchange for their portrait. This afternoon I ran into Tim on Grant Street just off Bush near Chinatown. Tim was panhanding with a sign that read need $ for alcohol research, and asked me for money. I told Tim about my $2 Portrait Project and he agreed to pose. Tim and I talked quite a bit about my photography. He was interested in knowing how fast my camera could go, if I could catch a hummingbird's wings in flight for instance. He asked if I could shoot faster than one hundredth of a second. I told him that I could shoot as fast as 1/8000th of a second and he seemed impressed by that. Tim is from Grass Valley. He said he mostly did fishing work but that when there isn't any work he hangs out in San Francisco, like now. Tim is 57. He was the only son in his family. He himself really wanted a son as well but ended up having four daughters. He also now has nine grandaughters. Still no son or grandson. Tim said that he sees his girls a lot. I asked Tim if he'd travelled much in his life and he said that he did. He said that his favorite place he'd been was New Zealand but that he also liked Costa Rica alot. We talked about some traveling I'd done in Europe myself a number of years back and we talked about different places in the United States. We both agreed that Manhattan was over the top. Tim also said that he liked Florida alot. He told me I should go down and take pictures down in the Florida Keys. Tim told me that he's been online before. He was aware of Flickr and said that he's already on Flickr. I asked him if he had his own site on the web and he laughed and said, no, I wish. With that I thanked Tim for his portrait and he thanked me for the cash and I headed on my way to my BART train.

Tyrone
Made by Thomas Hawk
Recently I blogged about a new project that I am starting called $2 portraits. The idea is that I will offer $2 to anyone who asks me for money from now on in exchange for their portrait. I was coming out of the Stockton Tunnel today when I ran into Tyrone. I was wearing my headphones and Tyrone signaled me to get my attention. I took off my headphones to hear what he had to say and he looked at my shoes and he said to me, I bet you I can guess where you got those shoes at. I asked him where I got the shoes and he said, are you ready, and I said yes and he said are you really ready, to which I said yes again and then he answered, you got those shoes on your feet. Get it, that's where you got those shoes at, you got those shoes on your feet right now. With that opening line Tyrone asked me for money and I told him about my $2 portrait project. After I told him about it he thought for about 30 seconds and then said, I tell you what, I'll pose for your picture for $3. I told him that the project only paid two and he easily agreed. I asked Tyrone where he grew up. He said he was born and raised in San Francisco. He said he went to Balboa High in the city. I asked him if he had any kids and he said he had a son. He said his son lived down with his mom in Fresno. I asked him if his son was still in school and Tyrone said he was. He said he didn't get to see his son much. I asked Tyrone what the best job he ever had was and he answered back to me, man, I haven't had a job since 1997. I asked Tyrone what job he had in 1997 and he told me he was flipping burgers for McDonald's back then. I thanked Tyrone for his photo and his story and he thanked me back and gave me a couple of fist bumps. And with that we were each on our way.

Miss Jones taught me english But I think I just shot her son ‘Cause he owed me money With a bullet in the chest you can not run Now he’s bleeding in a vacant lot The one in the summer where we used to smoke pot I guess I didn’t mean it But man you shoulda seen it His flesh explode Slow motion see me let go We tend to die young Slow motion see me let go What a brother knows Slow motion see me let go Now the cops will get me But girl if you will let me I’ll take your pants off I got a little bit of blow we could both get off Later bathing in the afterglow Two lines of coke I cut with Drano And her nose starts to bleed A most beautiful ruby red Slow motion see me let go We’ll remember these days Slow motion see me let go Urban life decay Slow motion see me let go And at home my sister’s eating paint chips again Maybe that’s why she’s insane I shut the door to the moaning And I shoot smack in veins Wouldn’t you? See my neighbor’s beating his wife Because he hates his life There’s a knock to his fist as he swings Oh man what a beautiful thing And death slides close to me Won’t grow old to be A junkie wino creep Hollywood glamorized my wrath I’m a young urban psychopath I incite murder for your entertainment ‘Cause I needed the money, what’s your excuse? The joke’s on you Slow motion see me let go Oh yeah Slow motion see me let go -3eb

fisheyed

San Francisco, 2007 So I've uploaded six photos this morning instead of my usual two or three, on account of sf buckaroo told me to. :) He thinks I'm bein' stingy. Heh. Whew -- Saturday afternoon was all kinds of neat-o: I met up with and pfeyh for lunch at L'Osteria del Forno, a superb, tiny (ten table) Italian restaurant in North Beach before heading down to Union Square for a kick-ass photo stroll. Bucko very generously allowed me to use his fisheye lens, which thrilled me no end (look at my face here -- I ask you, am I not clearly thrilled?). So, this is me, standing on the top of the Sutter-Stockton Garage. Photo of me, taken by Bucko with my camera and his lens. Gotta love how Flickr brings people and photo equipment together, eh? :) Oh, hey, Bucko? Please add in my tags which fisheye lens it was that you let me borrow. Thanks!

San Francisco, 2007 My sister will be making a third attempt (well, I guess you'd say the doctor will be doing this) at inducing labor today (23rd) to deliver her baby girl (due last Thursday, and now a decidedly bouncing 8.5 lbs); so either she'll deliver Friday night or sometime on Saturday -- when I'll be in San Francisco for a quick visit. So no scheduled Flickrwalkin' with my friends just in case I need to high-tail right back to L.A. to start photographing the first niece. :) This is a view from the Sutter-Stockton Garage over to the handsome Notre Dame des Victoires Catholic church, built in 1913 by Louis Brochoud. The stained glass looks lovely from the outside; one day, I'll have to actually drop by for a look inside.

This horse cost $23,000
Made by Sean Munson
It was bought by their chairman at an FAO Schwarz auction. The sign says do not ride. According to the sales person, they had a bit of an epidemic of riders before the sign went up -- people put their babies on for a pictures; the horse would fall over. Grown men would ride it, and it would fall over. The salesman seemed surprised that people wanted to ride it. I was surprised that anyone could resist the temptation, even with the sign. This is also not for sale.

The Stockton Tunnel
Made by bats...
Getting sidetracked on the way to Chinatown with 6 other photographers. They all saw the tunnel and we almost didn't get further, with all those curious eyes poking around, looking for the best angle for a perfect shot :-)

Bought in the local liquor store on Bush street in San Francisco, for drinking after a chinese at the Great Eastern (and a couple of Tsing Tsao's) this was nothing to write home about, but one of my favourite labels ever!

Photog Face-off: Ken Yeung vs Lisa Bettany
Made by Lisa Bettany {Mostly Lisa}
Ken Yeung and I faced-off in a photography challenge at last night's SummerMash event in SF. The jury is still out on who won, but only one of us had an L-Lens :P

Chef Chris Cosentino and KK

Once again, KK is my proxy as I am camera shy. He signed her menu with an illustration of a cute pig and Pork is the new vegetable! You don't have to tell me twice: that is my favorite animal of all time...to eat.

Watch the way I elevate
Made by WarzauWynn
It's hard to picture the way space is configured here, but my head, the corner on the floor and the light on the mirrored ceiling are all in focus because of the diagonal focal plane from the tilted lens.

My dad is test-driving the new Infiniti hybrids to generate telemetry data that will help them refine the software that controls the drivetrain. We just took a lap around the city.
