Istanbul - The Blue Mosque
Made by Traces in the Sand
Standing as a counterpoint to the Aya Sofya, the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, widely known as the Blue Mosque, is one of Istanbul's greatest mosques, and the only mosque in the world with six minarets..... and here's why (so it's said) Before Sultan Ahmet I went to Mecca, he told his archtects that he wanted a mosque with six gold minarets. His architects knew that there just wasn't that kind of money around, so they chose to have a hearing problem. altin - gold, and alti - six being fairly similar in pronunciation - and so it was. As far as I know the architects got away with it... I took this photo back in 2004, but I thought now a suitable time to upload it along with some recent shots of the interior (the day as was there last year it was heaving down with rain, so a bit dark for exterior shots.)

Istanbul - The Blue Mosque - Celestial
Made by Traces in the Sand
My 1000th photo on Flickr!! Standing as a counterpoint to the Aya Sofya, the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, widely known as the Blue Mosque, is one of Istanbul's greatest mosques. It gets the name Blue mosque due to the use of blue-green Iznik tiles which decorate the interior - 21,000 in all. The central dome is 43m high and 23.5m across supporteed by four round piers and on each side is supported by semi-domes. It's breathtaking.
