Culturally sensitive With his GPS, Mac marks the spot of what appears to be an old homestead along this old trail. My wife and I have been wanting to mark this on the map, having found it on a couple of previous hikes, for a while. At this site, there appear to be the remnants of two old houses built of stone. What appear to be parts of the chimney's still survive. There are also a couple of stone walls that have been built on the site. There is a very small stream that runs straight down the middle and what looks to be an old road leading here. I haven't been able to find anything out on the history, here. This was a great place to have our fajitas, so we did. I shot a bunch of photos of this site for a panoramic I'll be putting together, when time permits, and I'll add it to this album. This was our destination on this hike. We actually hiked a bit further up the trail, where we hooked up to an old, closed section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. We met two hikers at that trail intersection, Melvin and Bernie, who were hiking the old, closed section, on their way to the Widow's Creek trail, where they spent Saturday night at Site A. We all got back together at Site D and swapped hiking and gear stories, that night. gregeans.com

A hike along an old, forgotten trail: Here is a view of Stone Mountain, the park's main draw, through the trees along the trail we hiked Saturday, January 7. This trail is an extension of the Widow's creek trail, continuing after Site D. The official Stone Mountain State Park map that you pick up at the ranger's station, has the location of Site D marked in error. On this map, Site D is marked further in the wilderness and on a completely different trail. It can be very confusing if you're counting on this map for direction on the trail. In other words, if you get off-trail, don't expect the map you picked up at the ranger's station to help you out in any way. It is very inaccurate and unreliable. It's almost better to leave the map behind because it can really throw you off. So, the view from the trail in this photo is actually from an unofficial extension of the Widow's Creek Trail, which continues for about a half mile after Site D in a fashion that appears to be a real trail. After that it gets a little hairy. BUT! It's great hiking!! Straight uphill. gregeans.com

A steep climb and thoughts of food. Even with daypacks, the climb is still pretty rough on us. It seems like the ascent is never-ending. We start talking about visiting a Chinese buffet restaurant as soon as we get off of the trail. Every once in a while, pepperoni pizza makes it's way into the conversation, as well. We are prepared, though. We've brought along chicken, beef, a red pepper, onion, the stove and cooking pots for a Fajita lunch. I normally only use the stove for boiling water for coffee in the woods but, I'll have to say, the fajita's really hit the spot. gregeans.com
