Crumbling Beauty | Old Customs House | Bangkok
Made by I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com
The Old Customs House was once the gateway to Thailand, levying taxes on traders moving in and out of the kingdom. Designed by an Italian architect and built in the 1880s, the front door opened onto its source of income (the river) and the grand façade was ceremoniously decorated in columns and transom windows. Today it's a crumbling yet hauntingly beautiful home to the fire brigade, with sagging shutters, peeling colonial yellow paint and laundry flapping on the unpainted balconies. Plans to resurrect this building as a super-luxurious Aman Resort seem to have stalled (10 years ago, would have been great), so anyone with a large wad of spare cash and ambitions as a hotelier should contact the government. It's not open to the public, but it is OK to wander around…as long as you the whole structure doesn’t collapse on you first. Chinese cinema fans might recognize it from Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love (a great film). Visit my website: Southeast Asia Images Link to Thailand’s premier image gallery:

Old East Asiatic Company HQ | Bangkok | Thailand
Made by I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com
The classical Venetian-style facade of the East Asiatic Company (built in 1884) is situated next to the Oriental Hotel (that's the famous Author's Wing on the left) on the banks of the Chao Praya River. The company was central to developing trade between Thailand and the rest of the world and this building was its headquarters. The company traces its origin back to 1884, when Captain H N Andersen, a Danish sea captain, established a trading company in Bangkok at the famous Oriental Avenue. In 1897 Captain Andersen formally set up the East Asiatic Company in Copenhagen. The company started out by running teak concessions in the north and importing goods by water freight via the Chao Phraya River. Now disussed and empty, it will hopefully now conserved as a historical building. Visit my website: Southeast Asia Images Link to Thailand’s premier image gallery:

Rose
Made by The Wandering Angel
Bold March sunlight bounces off the yellow-grey-brown claybricks of the house across the gardens; the next-door neighbour’s cut the dead ivy and the reflected light hits the artificial flowers and their strong delicate colours, glowing in their various cobalt vases; blooming joyful where living flowers find that corner sad; the flowers as if washed today with brighter water-colours; as if grace itself, wishing to send a message to this room today, had chosen the spectrum of the flowers’ purples, yellows, blues and reds as its medium and message; and its smile; today, the spectrum is for me metaphor enough – its rainbow limits playing now-you-see-me… with the retina, hinting at the formless always beckoning there, beyond the form.. metaphor enough for heaven’s mind itself; and heaven’s smile. - Heaven as Spectrum, by Michael Shepherd (Rose window, Assumption Cathedral, Bangkok) - Seen in Explore, 25 April 2008

The head start . .
Made by grantthai
. . because s in town! When you go on a photoshoot with mates, especially one like Daniel who'se images are just ***, you may have a feeling of inadequacy, maybe they are better (maybe not), but even if not spoken between you, there is the competitive edge, I won't, in fact, cannot compete with this guy . . so, I'll cheat, and take this early morning start (before I meet him at 5:15am today) to post this! Yes, that's damn early (way too early for me normally) but that's why he's good, 'cos I'm the designated driver! and I'm driving him to exotic locations today (i.e. now, before sunrise, when it's dark, before people rise, when I should be in bed, he should too, you probably are, God, what have I let myself in for) . . but, ssshhh, don't tell him I posted this from our Friday shoot . . thanks! Have a great last day of the weekend, my friends.

Loi Krathong festival in Thailand on BBC Big Picture of the Day!!!
Made by Ken.Lam
One of my holidays snaps is on the BBC!! How cool is that!! news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/08/in_pictures_enl... This was one of the festivals that was happening when I was around. Its the Loi Krathong festival which happens on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. Here we see people offering little floats to the river spirits to wash away bad luck which some of them contain a little cash. Which is why there are people in the river to collect them!! Still on holiday but will catch when I get back! Lots of photos ops but hard to do when on holiday with the wife. Her standing around when I take shots is not her idea of fun.... shame she isn't into photography!

The Feast of the Assumption commemorates this religious occasion, St Mary's Day, on 15th August. The present church was reconstructed in 1909. Architectural contrasts
Made by berik
Christmas this year was spent in Bangkok, Thailand - truly wonderful. It's a big busy city, full of contrasts. The building in the foreground is now a fire station, but used to be the Customs House, designed by an Italian architect, and built in the 1880's. In the background is the Oriental Hotel. A stunning location on the Chao Phraya river, but just look at those windows - totally lacking in soul, but offering many guests a river view ...

Heaven in Bangkok.
Made by José Fernandez
Niu's on Silom. My favourite Jazz Bar-restaurant on earth. And probably the best Jazz club in Asia. Dont hesitate to go there for a drink, a good meal or to listen one of their amazing band. The owner is Italian so you will have a very good selection of wine to enjoy with traditional Thai food or Italian. 661 Floor 1-2 Silom Road, Silom, Bangkok 10500 www.niusonsilom.com/

Sri Mariamman
Made by Humandecoy - back
The Sri Mariamman Temple is located in the Bang Rak district of the city and is one of only two Hindu temples in the city. It was built in the 1860s by Tamil immigrants with colourful Hindu deities and a gopuram (tower) at the entrance just like you get in India. You can witness the daily rituals and prayers of the local Hindu community here but Thai's also visit as there are also Buddha images as well. Photo taken last year.

Note that this photograph only shows about 1/5 of all the balconies that are on this side of the building. Its one of the largest building in Southeast Asia, with 300,000 m² floor area.

Breeze
Made by potichao
This was one of the hot spots for photography. I have seen some wedding photos taken from this spot. Well, the area is... 'ok'. It does have some interesting spots for photos but the sun on that day was just too bright. I had to find some shades to take a proper portrait. I was, sweating like a dog. I think I would like to go back there some day but probably in the morning.
