Saint Saviour's Cathedral, Bruges, Belgium St. Saviour's was established as a parish around 850. Of the first small church on this site nothing is left. The today church and the lower part of the spire date from the 12th century. The main parts of the church are built in so-called Gothic of the Schelde (a Flemish river name) style of the 14th century. The ambulatory and the radiating chapels are remains of the less vertical Gothic of the 15th century. In 1834, when the diocese of Brugge is re-erected, this parish and collegiate church becomes cathedral, because the old St Donatian's Cathedral at the Burg Place is by then demolished by the French revolutionaty govemment. After a disastrous fire in 1839 the cathedral underwent extensive restoration and the tower made higher according to the new status as Cathedral so as not to be overshadowed by the neighbouring Church of Our Lady. St. Salvator wurde als Pfarrbezirk um 850 gegründet. Von der ersten kleinen Kirche ist nichts mehr übrig geblieben. Die heutige Kirche und der untere Teil des Kirchturms stammen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Der Stil der Hauptteile des Gebäudes ist Scheldegotik aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Der Chorumgang und die Kranzkapellen zeigen die schon weniger senkrechte Gotik des 15. Jahrhunderts. 1834, nach der neuen Gründung des Bistums Brügge, wurde diese Pfarrkirche und Stiftskirche zu Kathedrale, denn die Kathedrale St-Donaas auf dem Burgplatz war auf Befehl der französischen, revolutionären Regierung abgerissen worden. Nach einem schweren Brand im Jahre 1839 erfuhr die Kathedrale eine gründliche Restaurierung. Dabei wurde der Turm entsprechend dem neuen Status als Kathedrale wurde höher gemacht, damit er nicht vom Turm der benachbarten Liebfrauenkirche überragt wurde.

The main scene shows the announcement of the Saviour's birth to Mary. Die Hauptszene zeigt die Ankündigung der Geburt des Erlösers an Maria. Danach sagte Maria in ihrem Magnifikat: Meine Seele preist die Größe des Herrn, und mein Geist jubelt über Gott, meinen Retter. Denn auf die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd hat er geschaut. Siehe, von nun an preisen mich glückselig alle Geschlechter. Denn der Mächtige hat Großes an mir getan, und sein Name ist heilig. Come sono polemico oggi! In Belgio (come in Italia, ma forse di più in Belgio), il 90% delle cose da vedere visitabili (gratis) sono Chiese...poi dicono delle radici cristiane... io parlerei, almeno dal punto di vista turistico, le risorse cristiane... In Belgium (as well as in Italy, maybe a bit more), 90% of things you can visit in a town (mostly without buying a ticket) are churches. Someone quarreled about the existence of the Christian roots in Europe... I think that, at least from a turistic point of view, there are huge Christian RESOURCES!! Allu Belgiu (comu in Italia, forsi nu picchi de cchiui), u 90% de e cose 'vvidi su chiesie (e su l'uniche parti aru poi thrasire senza ppachi). Poi venine mme cuntine de e radici cristiane.. radici nnu ssacciu, ma risorse certamente, 'rmenu de nu puntu de vista turisticu!

Sint-Salvator became a cathedral fairly recently (1834). This new status prompted the hiring of architect William Chantrell in 1839, with instructions to restore the cathedral and to add to the tower, such that it would be higher than the nearby Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. Chantrell chose a Romanesque design that did not reach the desired height. The Historic Center of Brugge is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
