The cathedral drew world attention when the state funeral of President John F. Kennedy was offered there on November 25, 1963. Later the Lutheran funeral for William Rehnquist was also held here. Construction of the current church began in 1893, with the first mass being celebrated on June 2, 1895. It was finally dedicated in 1913. In 1939 the church was designated as a Cathedral when the Archdiocese of Washington was established. HPIM6548

Looks much better in the small size. I didn't hold the camera steady enough. It's such an amazing interior though that I had to post the photo. St Matthew the Apostle is the patron saint of civil servants (betcha didn't know we had a patron saint).
