Transit

Transit

Dec. 26, 2006 -- This was a fairly nondescript assignment at first glance, but yet again the numbers jumped out at me. I wanted to pull them out, and being new to the area I had been looking at transit maps over the few days before. I decided to replace the regular hairline rule with the redline, and tie it in to the flag. I also put the jumpline into its own stop. Working on Christmas Day, I couldn't really bounce this off the design director, but I definitely consulted with the other designers. After hearing their thoughts, I decided to go for it, and it paid off. Not even a month into the internship, I wanted to show I was comfortable enough to take risks and innovate on my own. They seemed pleased.

Feb. 9, 2007 -- I like breaking out of the box, when it's appropriate. I think it works with the race graphic at the top of the page. I kept it clean by cutting off the rules with plenty of space around the edges of the graphic, and the result is bending the rules while maintaining respect for the style. I also like the consistency in the refers near the bottom, even though they go with two different stories. I had nothing to do with the Spring Training Guide refer at the top of the page (though I do like it).

Gridlock

May 18, 2007 -- This page was completed under heavy deadline pressure. I had it done before deadline, but we were waiting on news about the top story in the front section. Because that story turned out the way it did, it bumped a story off of page 1 and onto my section front (the Gridlock story). Also note the table pullout. Tables are fun.

Faulk's farewell

Faulk's farewell
Made by Brent A. Jones
March 3, 2007 -- I was lucky enough to be in the Sports Front chair when Marshall Faulk announced his retirement from the NFL. I like the top refer I created, not because of the refer itself, but I like the framing effect. We also compiled a few key stats and ran them big, in Rams gold, which I also used on the subhed of the story.
