Behnisch & Partner make a strong case in this building for my evolving theory that in certain circumstances, a legible formal coherence in plan and section is completely irrelevant if the spaces within are individually excellent. This is a junior high school gym that for once does not look exactly like every other school gym I've ever been in - and in fact looks very nice! Well-lit, good view from the balcony here - I would have hated P.E. considerably less in this building, and I think that's worth recognizing. When we get to Behnisch again, way down the line in Munich, I'll try to put into words why the deconstructivist approach to planmaking sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn't....
