The Split Rock Furnace, located below the concrete dam at Splitrock Reservoir, was built in 1862 by Andrew B. Cobb. The 32-foot high charocal-fired stone furnace was built to smelt magnetite ore into the iron needed for the Civil War. The furnace operated for only about ten years, and was abandoned in the 1870s. It was the last of its kind build in Morris County, representing the end of the era of charcoal furnaces. Splitrock Reservoir is 625 acres of wilderness consisting of large lakes interconnected with islands on the border of Rockaway Township and Kinnelon. Splitrock was opened to the public in November, 2003. New Jersey State Register (1974) National Register #74001182 (1974)

Splitrock Reservoir is 625 acres of wilderness consisting of large lakes interconnected with islands on the border of Rockaway Township and Kinnelon. Splitrock, which is nestled deep in the woods where it can be reached by traveling a mile on a dirt road known as Split Rock Road, was opened to the public in November, 2003. It consists of several large lakes interconnected with many large islands, and includes a large on the southwest end.
