When Mount St. Helens erupted in in May of 1980 it threw around 0.7 cubic miles of debris. Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways and 185 miles (300 km) of highway were destroyed. When I was there in July 2006 it was just a little gassy. Whew... Prior to May 18, 1980 few people could picture how Spirit Lake was created. Well, now we know! It was created by mudflows, lahars, lava flows and maybe even glacial deposits blocking the upper Toutle River canyon. We won't see large old fir and hemlock trees growing around the lake, but that will happen at some point in time again.

Photo taken 10 years after St. Helens erupted. I found this slide I had taken some 18 years ago and scanned it using an Epson Perfection 4990 flatbed scanner. The slide was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel camera and Fujichrome Velvia and later scanned with an Epson Perfection 4990 flatbed scanner.

What's wrong with this picture?! It's July 19th and there are no cars in the parking lot. The access road is still closed to the public because of snow and rock falls. This is a normally busy spot in the summer.

where's the singletrack?!

We saw one motorized vehicle up on the Windy Ridge area today. And, one other (road) cyclist. We did see lower down on the Ape Canyon trail 3 hikers and two other mountain bikers.
