The Spalentor (Gate of Spalen) is a gate that was once part of Basel's medieval city walls. The walls were built following an earthquake in 1356 which virtually leveled old Basel and is today thought to have been the strongest documented earthquake ever to strike Central Europe. In 1859 the city passed an official resolution of expansion, and the city walls were torn down, leaving only three gates standing alone.
