In many ways, this was the highlight of our trip to Southern Africa. Words or images cannot describe how it felt to enter this dead vlei. The dead tree you see here might be 900 years old, and has been burned black by the scorching sun. Read more about the pan and its origin on wikipedia. It is relatively easy to get to the pan. If you manage to get to Sesriem Campsite (or Lodge), it is an hour drive further to the west on a nice asphalt road. When you get to where the asphalt road ends (and the deep sand begins), you can park your car and then walk for 15 minutes to the south. You cannot miss it, as hundreds of footprints in the sand will lead you there. Remember to bring a bottle of water!
