Smithfield Market

A picture of Gate 18 of the Poultry Market at Smithfield, London. Several other parts of the market are still very much open for business. Smithfield was originally the Smooth Field just outside the city walls and was used over the centuries (going back as far as the tenth century) as London's main livestock market. As a large open space close to the City it was a favourite place for gatherings such as public executions and jousting. Coin forgers were boiled in oil here during the 16th century. And as a counter balance perhaps, Smithfield was also the site of two monasteries - St Bartholomew the Great and Charterhouse. In 1666 the Smithfield area was left mostly untouched by the Great Fire of London. And in the same century, several residents of Smithfield emigrated to the United States where they founded the town of Smithfield, Rhode Island. These days, around 120,000 tons of produce pass through the market each year. As well as meat and poultry, products such as cheese, pies, and other delicatessen goods are available. Bargaining between buyers and sellers at Smithfield sets the guidelines for meat and poultry prices throughout the UK. (Taken in part from Wikipedia) Part of the set.

Ready to race with (slightly) pimped Bromptie
Made by marcus_jb1973
I came 12th in the final - which I think is not too bad at all. The modification that makes the most difference is the tyres - they are awesome. However, they are very weak indeed - I have many cuts and holes in them already and have had a puncture (which is something I never have with Brompton green tyres). I am sure losing the mudguards and the titanium seatpost make some differences - certainly do when carrying it! The 54 tooth chaninring is really good with the Stelvio tyres - I am just not sure those tyres will last too long, so we'll have to see what happens when I go back to the greens. Will I be strong enough to keep the 54 or do I drop back to my 50 tooth? Ah well - the World Championships are next!

The Bigfish bike folded - it was quite a complex fold, but I guess you learn it quickly

Their big design concept was to keep the main frame as one piece (i.e. no fold in that) This inevitably leads to a longer folded package, but should mean a stiffer bike. It was a nice concept for sure and it's a pretty cool looking thing. I did not get to ride it or lift it up (looks quite heavy). I believe that the bike will be about 400 Euros
