Sweden, Stockholm, Skogskyrkogården Skogskyrkogården (translated as The Woodland Cemetery) is a cemetery located in the Enskededalen district south of central Stockholm, Sweden. Its design reflects the development of architecture from national romantic style to mature functionalism. Skogskyrkogården came about following an international competition in 1915 for the design of a new cemetery in Enskede in the southern part of Stockholm, Sweden. The design of the young architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz was selected. Work began in 1917 on land that had been old gravel quarries that were overgrown with pine trees and was completed three years later. The architects' use of the natural landscape created an extraordinary environment of tranquil beauty that had a profound influence on cemetery design throughout the world. The crematorium, with its remarkable Faith, Hope, and Holy Cross Chapels was Gunnar Asplund's final work of architecture, opened shortly before his passing in 1940. In 1994, Skogskyrkogården was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and although it does not have the number of famous interments as the Norra begravningsplatsen, its much older counterpart in northern Stockholm, it is a major tourist attraction. At the Tallum Pavilion, visitors can see an exhibition about the cemetery and the story of its origins and the two architects whose vision created it. Explore: Oct 17, 2011 #393

An angel at the cemetary
Made by peter.wittinghoff
Angel came down from heaven yesterday She stayed with me just long enough to rescue he And she told me a story yesterday, About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea And then she spread her wings high over me She said she's gonna come back tomorrow And I said fly on my sweet angel, Fly on through the sky, Fly on my sweet angel, Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side Sure enough this morning came unto me Silver wings silhouetted against the child's sunrise And my angel she said unto today is the day for you to rise, Take my hand, you're gonna be my man, You're gonna rise And she took high over yonder And I said fly on my sweet angel, Fly on through the sky, Fly on my sweet angel, Forever I will be by your side

why this clear connection between the architecture of social democracy and that of fascist italy? I can hardly tell the difference. for all their very different values, social democracy and fascism in the 20's and 30's shared an image of the state as a kind of parent...in scandinavia architects like asplund and arne jacobsen looked to italy for inspiration, turning their backs on the modernism, they had just embrassed, in favour of an abstract classicism. the so far. more words, yada, yada, yada.

The Elm Hill I
Made by H Sundholm
Another pixelated frame from Skogskyrkogården (or The Woodland Cemetary) in Stockholm. Almhöjden (or The Elm Hill) is a beautiful place, and I'll upload some more photos of it in the near future. PS. One of my old heavy metal heroes, Ronnie James Dio, died today. I actually got a bit sad, hearing that a man who made my last years of compulsory school bearable had crossed over. In retrospect, I think this photo works well to acknowledge my appreciation for Dio's music and to say - rest in peace, old man. Rest in peace. Part I –

The End
Made by H Sundholm
Time for some gloom and doom! Photos does tend to look sad in black and white, especially if they are shot in a cemetary. This isn't just any cementary for that matter. Skogskyrkogården (or The Woodland Cemetary) is the largest burial site in Sweden. There are about 100 000 graves here; some of them belonging to famous people such as Eyvind Johnson and Greta Garbo. A pretty neat place for photography all in all. And by the way, this is the first panorama I upload to my stream.

skogskrematoriet, woodland cemetery, stockholm architect erik gunnar asplund 1937-1940 asplund is the father figure of the nordic masters...arne jacobsen followed, alvar aalto reinterpreted, utzon rebelled, lewerentz finally opposed. asplund himself died too young and thus delivered the ultimate father figure trump: being absent... the so far. more words, yada, yada, yada.

Woodland Cemetery, Stockholm, Sweden by Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz in 1915-40 Very subtle typography on this windowless wall indicates the function of this building. I wonder if it was designed by Lewerentz, as it has some connotation to the concrete flower kiosk at the cemetery in Malmö as well as some similarity in the use of brick to Markuskyrkan here in Stockholm. Skogskyrkogården in Stockholm, the Wood Cemetary, famous place and quite photogenic even if I did not cathc the place at its best. This is a manipulation to make the photograph look older than it is. Skogskyrkogården is a world heritage site in Stockholm. Here is a link to their home page and in English.

Little Planet of Life and Death
Made by H Sundholm
This little planet looks very much alive with its green grass, hedges, flowers and trees. Yet death has clearly visited upon the lands. Such is the paradox of a cemetary during summer. I've played around with the little planet effect as of late, so I will be uploading more of them in the near future. This particular planet was shot at The Woodland Cemetary in Stockholm.
