af Chapman

af Chapman
Made by Peer.Gynt
The af Chapman, formerly the Dunboyne (1888–1915) and the G.D. Kennedy (–1923), is a full-rigged steel ship moored on the western shore of the islet Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden, now serving as a youth hostel. Located on the shore next to the Admiralty House, the ship was built by the Whitehaven Shipbuilding Company, of Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) UK, and launched in February 1888[1]. It was originally known as Dunboyne, after a town in County Meath, Ireland. Its maiden voyage was from Maryport, Cumberland to Portland Oregon, USA, and it subsequently made voyages between Europe, Australia and the west coast of America. On its arrival in Sweden in 1915 it was renamed G. D. Kennedy and when the Swedish Navy bought it in 1923 it was given its present name after the shipbuilder and Vice Admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman (1721–1808). The Navy used it as a training ship and as such it made several trips around the world before serving as a barracks during WW2. Its final voyage was in 1934. The Stockholm City Museum saved it from being broken up in 1947 and since 1949 it has been managed by the Svenska Turistföreningen (STF, Swedish Tourist Association) and serves as a youth hostel with 285 beds. During 2008 the ship underwent a comprehensive restoration.[2][3] While the ship was being worked on in a drydock, the adjacent youth hostel Skeppsholmen remained open. Usually, the af Chapman and Skeppsholmen – not to be confused with the islet of the same name, on which both are situated – are run as a single hostel, with the af Chapman offering somewhat more extraordinary accommodation and Skeppsholmen housing the reception, a kitchen for guests, and other facilities.

There's a little story to this. It was shot inside the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, where photographing is strictly prohibited. So when this guy started snapping away, I just had to, well, take a picture of it. :-) I feel justified in taking it, though, since I'm not really showing or spreading any of the artwork, and after all I'm documenting a crime! The technical quality is maybe not as good as it should have been, but I blame the conditions! I'm shy about photographing strangers and there were guards all over the place (no doubt armed and very dedicated). There wasn't time to adjust any settings, and it was taken from the hip, looking in the opposite direction without looking, and while walking out of the room. The result was out of focus and almost totally black, so what you see is the magic of postprocessing. As for the art, this was pretty spectacular. I think it was called Your Conditional Daylight or something like that, it's a long metal column with mirrors on the inside and a glowing plate on the end - the inside looks like an huge ball of light, or the sun. A neat effect, not to mention how it made everybody look as they walked underneath and coincidentally looked up, and froze with their jaws open like deers in headlights or abductees under a UFO. Yay to the artist (does anyone know the name?), my apologies to Moderna Museet.

I took this shot during my previous photo session in Stockholm. This is actually a Youth Hostel. Even though it was well past the blue hour period, I took this shot as it looked pleasing to the eyes. Well, it didn't turn up that pleasing in the end as the lights are completely blown out in the background. Moreover, the blue sky would have added more to this shot. Will try this shot again during the blue hour... another motivation for carrying my camera kit on a business trip :-) I am back from a short vacation... so will visit your photo streams soon. Wishing you all a great weekend!

Endless Blue Hour... HDR

Endless Blue Hour... HDR
Made by AbhijeetVardhan
Well, since, I am not busy taking any new photos (thanks to the weather and work), I have been keeping busy myself by looking at the photos posted on Flickr and trying some photoshop tricks. I recently came across a HDR tutorial by Ryan McGinnis and thought of trying it. Found this shot (3 exposures) in my archive and gave it a try. I guess, the HDR has turned out a bit better than what I had been able to achieve through another technique. BTW, these shots were taken at 22:40 on 06.06.2007 in Stockholm. During summer, the blue hour never ends... My set.

Taken in Stockholm. This boat was here a few days and open to visit. Name of the boat: Götheborg. I went for a severe post processing aiming at bringing a contrasty vintage and grainy look. Hope you will like it ;) My website: www.wix.com/Malnory/Jean-M More photos from my work on my facebook page!!! www.facebook.com/pages/Jean-M-Photography/119816151390439

Another Stockholm shot from the archives... shot with my trusted old D70 (now in the safe hands of my cousin). This is a Youth Hostel btw... called the Hostel of Chapman. Should be very interesting to stay in it. Wishing you all a great week ahead! I am still looking for a suitable title for this shot... so any help would be appreciated!

Took a trip to Stockholm city this evening to take some photos. I just got home and am too tired to process all shots. I will just upload this tonight. This is a view on Skeppsholmen with the Ship af Chapman, this is now a hostel. The building that you see is called Amiralitetshuset in swedish (the Admirality builing). My friend Peter, seen here in the lobby of the Moderna Museet by Rafael Moneo in Stockholm. Not the greatest of photos but I thought I'd upload this today as my friend and fellow photographer Peter here became a father for the second time yesterday. Good news, but the timing isn't great as it's usually around about now we head off somewhere for a photography trip. Still, we are considering a trip to Marrakech in the Autumn instead which will more than make up for it..

East Indiaman Götheborg

East Indiaman Götheborg
Made by hector melo
The East Indiaman Götheborg (Swedish: Ostindiefararen Götheborg) is a large wooden sailing ship, a replica of the East Indiaman Götheborg (an archaic spelling of Göteborg: Gothenburg). The original sank off Gothenburg, Sweden, on 12 September 1745, while approaching its home harbour after returning from her third voyage to the Far East. All sailors survived, but the ship was lost

I love this building but find it very hard to photograph. That is because it is situated behind trees on a small hill. I went around looking for an angle and this was the best I could find. I am very glad for my Ultra wide zoom.... The building that you see is called Amiralitetshuset in swedish (the Admirality builing). Built in 1650, the current exteriour is from 1844-1846.

Here's another try at capturing this unique youth hostel during the blue hour. It was a bit challenging situation as the hostel and the buildings in the background are very well lit but the ambient light was fading fast. I tried my best to expose for the boat correctly and to also get a bit of blue sky. I guess, I need to invest in ND filters now. My set.

Here's an extended panorama view over Strömmen (or The Stream). Shot from Skeppsholmen. On the other side, we see Slussen, Old Town, and farthest to the right, a bit of The Stockholm Palace. Nothing special per se; it is Midsummer's Eve and I wanted to upload something summery. This will have to do!

The ship that you see in the background is a hostel named Af Chapman. It's a very nice place to stay at if you want to stay in the center of Stockholm, and don't want to spend too much money on once of the fancy hotels. The shot was taken during my photo walk with Johan Lindström. Please view

Fireworks over Skeppsholmen just a few minutes in to 2011. The weather was not good tonight. It was snowing quite hard and the snow got on the lens. But a few shot were taken anyway. I will leave you with this one tonight. Happy new year to all of my friends on Flickr and to everyone else too.
