I shot this on the fly as I was driving past. This house, on Main Street in New Auburn (next-door to the big blue house that was recently torn down) is the site of one of Maine's most notorious and grisly homicides. In 1984, a four-year-old girl was killed here when her mother's boyfriend shut her in the oven and then turned it on, literally roasting her to death. The crime sent shock waves through Maine and around the world. John Lane, who was subsequently convicted of murder, claimed he believed it was Lucifer he was killing. I just finished reading a book about this crime. Lucifer's Child, written by a local attorney and author named Elliott Epstein, gives a fascinating and sobering glimpse into the lives of two people who should never have met, and shows how their meeting led to a tragic fate for this little girl. I realize it's been a quarter of a century, but I wonder if anybody lives in that apartment? I know I couldn't live there. Just walking through the door would be enough to give me nightmares.

An interior view of the 1890s apartment building in Auburn that I documented, prior to its demolition. All three of the floors above the street level originally had three enfiladed rooms along the front, connected by these arched openings. Only the top floor retained the original pattern. As you can see from the light on the floor, it was a brilliantly sunny day, with no electricity in the building to provide artificial lighting that would balance off the bright natural light. Fortunately, TMY has a very nice range, and allowed for plenty of detail in the shadows of the room in the foreground. Shen-Hao HZX 4x5, TMAX 400 90mm Fujinon lens f32, 3 seconds

An interior view of the 1890s apartment building in Auburn that I documented, prior to its demolition. The main staircase to the various floors was located on the front corner of the building, and opened on each floor to an open porch. The TMY really did a nice job here--I needed a long exposure to pick up detail in the staircase, and was willing to sacrifice the porch opening. It turns out that I didn't need to be concerned--I'm very impressed by how much detail the negative retained through the porch window. Shen-Hao HZX 4x5, TMAX 400 90mm Fujinon lens f32, 15 sec.

An exterior oblique view of an 1890s apartment building in Auburn, ME that is slated for demolition. I was hired to carry out the photographic documentation of the building, on a really lovely fall day. Both the the camera and the building were more or less level; its the scan that is off-center! I'll have to rescan the negative. Shen-Hao HZX 4x5, TMAX 100 150mm Schneider Xenar lens f32, 1/8 sec.

While waiting at a store for a friend, I hopped out and took this picture. On Main St in Auburn Next to the Mobil, this is where you will find this picture. Lewiston is in the background.

I love this old gem, but it's starting to decay. There's now graffiti spray-painted onto the siding, and some of the windows are broken. Why hasn't somebody done anything about it?

This is where the canals of Lewiston Maine drain into the Androscoggin River. The city sewer, and textile mills use to dump into it.
