Maya Lin's Sounding Stones was installed outside the Federal Courthouse Plaza in 1996. Consisting of four sequentially placed granite blocks, each cut through to create viewing holes to see neighboring blocks or to see and hear water fountains contained within the blocks, they mark the pedestrians' path between the path between the Worth and Earl Street entrances to the Federal Building. ach stone averages six feet square, but varies in separation between blocks. The rough quarry-cut bore holes were left untouched, and the surfaces that were cut to form each block are the only polished surfaces.
