Amsterdam Cityscape and architecture Amsterdam fans out south from the Amsterdam Centraal railway station. The Damrak is the main street and leads into the street Rokin. The oldest area of the town is known as de Wallen (the quays). It lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city's famous red light district. To the south of de Wallen is the old Jewish quarter of Waterlooplein. The 17th century girdle of concentric canals, known as the Grachtengordel, embraces the heart of the city where homes have interesting gables. Beyond the Grachtengordel are the former working class areas of Jordaan and de Pijp. The Museumplein with the city's major museums, the Vondelpark, a 19th century park named after the Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel, and the Plantage neighbourhood, with the zoo, are also located outside the Grachtengordel. Several parts of the city and the surrounding urban area are polders. This can be recognized by the suffix -meer which means lake, as in Aalsmeer, Bijlmermeer, Haarlemmermeer, and Watergraafsmeer. The old city centre is the focal point of all the architectural styles before the end of the 19th century. Jugendstil and Art Deco are mostly found outside the city’s centre in the neighbourhoods built in the early 20th century, although there are also some striking examples of these styles in the city centre. Most historic buildings in the city centre and nearby are houses, such as the famous merchants' houses lining the canals. Page # 1 Explore. Dear all, have a Flickerized 2009!!! Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the Venice of the North. The Westerkerk (western church) is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal. Here's a view of the Westertoren in the winter -5 ºC december 2008, Jordaan - Amsterdam De belangrijkste toeristische trekpleisters van Nederland zijn in Amsterdam te vinden.

I just love Amsterdam at night. Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city, which had a population of 1.36 million on 1 January 2008, comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million. Its name is derived from Amstellerdam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were formed. The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually.

Atlas is an icon in Greek mythology and commonly used in western culture, as a symbol of strength or stoic endurance. He is supporting an enormous round globe on his back and shoulders. The globe originally represented the celestial sphere of ancient astronomy, rather than the earth. The use of the term atlas as a name for collections of terrestrial maps and the modern understanding of the earth. Atlas stands on the Royal Palace at the Dam in Amsterdam. In former days to children it was told that as if Atlas let the ball fall, Amsterdam would go down under! Photo of Altas taken at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam with a partial Eclipse when Earth and Moon are nearly in a straight line created in PS. The light of the partial Eclipse (Ancient Greek from verb, I cease to exist, combined with, I am absent) strikes Atlas the symbol of strength, carrying the world on his shoulder.

The Royal Palace in Amsterdam is one of three palaces in the Netherlands which is at the disposal of Queen Beatrix by Act of Parliament. It is situated in the west side of Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. It was built by Jacob van Campen, who took control of the construction project in 1648, as the Town Hall for the City of Amsterdam, and was built on 13,659 wooden piles and cost 8,5 million gulden. Jacob van Campen was inspired by Roman administrative palaces. He drew inspiration from the public buildings of Rome. Yesterday it was a busy Sunday afternoon and this Dutch painter was painting our Royal Palace. Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde did paint it too way back in 1673. Not much has changed since then even the clouds look the same except maybe the horses were replaced by the bikes of today.

The Oudezijds Achterburgwal is a street canal in the center of Amsterdam. The bridge between the OZ Voorburgwal Old Street and Oude Hoogstraat is a clear dividing line between the noisy northern wall part and the quiet southern part. The northern part is full of sex shops, prostitutes window, peepshows, brothels, coffee shops and pubs. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is located on the northern part of the OZ Achterburgwal. In the southern part are more buildings like the University of Amsterdam, as well the Inside Hospital and Oudemanhuispoort. The OZ Achterburgwal was refurbished in 2006 by the city of Amsterdam. The municipality announced in December 2007 that the window prostitution in the Red Light will be drastically reduced. The number of windows on the OZ Achterburgwal will be further reduced by properties to purchase. The OZ Achterburgwal side alleys is one of the few areas where window prostitution will not entirely disappear.

Deep Winter in Kiev

Deep Winter in Kiev

Thanks for all the continued comments! Here are your TOP pics: . Thanks again! This looks nice: Kiev is a cold place in the winter. I can't for the life of me figure out why the Germans chose to invade these old Russian cities in the winter months. They say the Russians had some significant success because they initially did not depend on tanks, which are not great in the snow, but instead relied on horse-cavalry. All of this ultimately made me think that the only thing worse than being a German soldier during a Kiev winter would be being a Russian horse. Over on the right there, you can see the huge statue celebrating the Great Patriotic War, which we know as WWII. I am headed to Iceland in a few hours to hang out with Asmundur - I can't wait! I also took a few interesting shots here in Amsterdam, but I've had no time to process them.... coming soon!

WOW!!!! It’s really great to live in Amsterdam right now. It’s like queens day but then 4 days in a row. It really gives me a great feeling; to bad it’s only ones every 5 years. We had sail in yesterday and I decided to take my bike and cycle about 25 km (there where to many traffic jams). There where really a lot of people there, on the shore and on the water. There where so many boats there that they where fighting to get a good spot and the people on the shore drew the short stick unfortunately, so I decide to go to the center of Amsterdam where I climbed a bus booth and I got this shot. …………………………………………………… Camera: Canon EOS 5D MarkII Exposure: sec 1/1000 Aperture: f/ 13.0 Focal Length: 180mm ISO Speed: 400 All invites, notes and tags are welcome

Johannes van Dam is currently living out his dream, performing famously in his role as the number one restaurant reviewer in Amsterdam. He works for the newspaper Het Parool and is currently spending his Sunday morning at a his local coffee shop reading his own review in the newspaper, smiling ruefully. He is happy to talk to me and motions out at the rainy street. This was a canal about 30 years ago, he nods, looking over his glasses. Then we build road because we not need that canal anymore. He shakes the newspaper and backhand slaps his review in a gesture of disbelief. He utters some Dutch explicative while laughing, and then stabs at his column with his finger. This is a good review my friend! This looks best This comes from my

Okay, okay I know this isn’t what you call a news flash, it’s been snowing in Amsterdam for about 3 week already but it was the first time I was able to take my canon out for hunting. This was actually a stupid think to do (cycling trough Amsterdam). All the streets have turned into ice and people have actually been ice-skating on the streets where cars usually drive. After a lot of slipping and sliding I came through unscaved. I’ve even been able to walk on the frozen cannels of Amsterdam, this was a first for me and I really enjoyed it. There where some big cracks and soft spots but I kept it dry. I hope you all are enjoying the weather in your location whether it hot or cold.

Thank you to my fans! Here are your favorite pics: . Thanks for the comments! This looks nice: The Ukraine has some unique architecture. Below is a section of some unique homes that I think look like they came right out of Smurfville or Disneyworld. In other parts of Ukraine, the buildings are all concrete, blocky, and throwbacks to Soviet government-mandated design, so it is nice to see a reminiscent style of architecture that seems to blend the olde world and the modern. I'm leaving the Ukraine today to head to Amsterdam, where we have the Casual Games convention lined up. I'll be pretty busy there, but I've always got the camera in the bag if an opportunity arises.

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks! This was taken my final evening in Holland. I found a remote pastoral area with several olde world windmills. I was the only one around... I got fairly cold waiting for sunset, but I think it was worth it. I have a lot more pictures from around the Netherlands still unprocessed, but I look forward to sharing them with you in coming weeks. I hope you enjoy this one. from my daily photo blog at www.stuckincustoms.com

I took this photo tonight in Amsterdam city centre near NH Central Station looking out over one of the many famous canals just after sunset. I have never in my life seen two cities so close together on the map so different as Amsterdam and Almere, Amsterdam is so alive at night teaming and dynamic and Almere is almost asleep at night. Just be careful stopping to take photos you could almost get run over in Amsterdam! Amsterdam is the capital and largest city in the Netherlands. Right after taking some shots of the guy in my previous upload, this guy came walking by. Once I noticed him he had already past me and was heading for the red light district like a lot of tourist do when they visit Amsterdam. So I got a move on to pass him and his friends in one of the alleys and set myself up for the shot half a block down one of the following streets in the hope they were also heading this way. I guessed right and got the shot while he was coming around the corner. For some reason I get the feeling he is Italian.... View large

A church and a biker in a foreign country, reflected in a puddle... Me& a couple of million of Dutch people went to a foreign, neighboring country with a slightly different approach towards Christmas last weekend and it was very nice, lots of food that you can't buy in the Netherlands and tons of new smells, sights&sounds (well, the sounds not so much, Dutch was spoken almost anywhere in the streets, it almost felt like being at home far away from the best city in the world) :)) Have a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2009! www.amstersam.com
