MTV Hazmat 5
Made by YFD
Mountain View Fire Department recently took delivery of this brand new Pierce Hazmat rig. By recently I mean it arrived in Mountain View from Pierce on Thursday night. The rig replaces the old HEAT 5 rig. While the team of Mountain View fire fighters handling incidents will still be known as the HEAT - Hazardous Emergency Action Team - the new rig will be known as Hazmat 5. It will likely be a couple of months befoe the rig is loaded and equipped and put into service. The rig is a 2010 Perice built on a Quantum chassis. The rig features a Detroit Diesel 16l engine, 25KW PTO generator and Will Burt NightScan light tower and electric awnings on both sides of the rig. One neat feture (I thought) was the kitty litter dispenser... sorry, the Absorball dispenser. There is a hopper in the right rear coffin box on the roof where you can put about 250lbs of Absorball, and the hopper feeds down a chute to an outlet in the right rear compartment. Just put a five gallon bucket at the bottom of the chute, open it up to get as much as you need and away you go... very nifty.

Junior Tangles with a Taureg
Made by kqedquest
To challenge the robot, the team parks a car out on Junior's test course. Junior gets a mission to park near the Taureg, but realizes he can't get around he the car. Junior backs up and takes another approach to get to the parking place. Tests like these are preparing Junior for the DARPA Urban Challenge, the urban robot race that will be held November 3rd, 2007. On the 60-mile race course at a former Air Force Base, other cars and robots will be driving on the course at the same time. Junior Flies By
Made by kqedquest
This Volkswagen Passat is actually robotic car - capable of driving itself. Using complex programming, the car takes sensor data and decides the best route and speed. It can also identify moving cars and obstacles around it - even allowing the car to stop at a four way stop sign and wait for its turn. The car is taking a test run here in an empty parking lot outside of Google headquarters. Laser Range Finder
Made by kqedquest
This laser range finder on the side of the car uses LIDAR technology to send out eye-safe beams. The piece on the bottom is spinning to send out the beams. Having sensors on all sides of the car was very important for the Stanford Racing Team. Since the DARPA Urban Challenge requires the car to park and back up - the robot needs sensor data from all sides, eliminating all the blind spots. Stanford Racing Team
Made by kqedquest
Mike Montemerlo is the software lead for the Stanford Racing Team. He has helped prepare Junior, the robotic car for the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. The Stanford team was the first to win a DARPA Grand Challenge, when their former robot, Stanley, made it through a 132-mile desert course in 2005. Lunar Eclipse 2008
Made by Elaine with Grey Cats
We arrived to watch the moonrise and eclipse begin -- and discovered that i'd loaded expired batteries. It turned out fine as we just sat in the car and watched the earth's shadow race across the lunar surface. Despite the clouds we could see how the moon turned red. It had been too overcast to see USA193 pass from north to west. I returned home to find an ABC news alert, U.S. MISSILE SCORES HIT ON DEFECTIVE SATELLITE, SOURCES SAY; RESULT OF STRIKE STILL BEING DETERMINED time stamped 8:17 pm.

Primary Eye
Made by kqedquest
Junior's main laser range finder is mounted on the roof, where it spins, sending out laser beams. The time it takes for the laser to bounce back tells the robot how far it is from it's surroundings. With that data, Junior builds a 3-D model ten times per second. Listen to the companion KQED-FM Radio piece on KQED QUEST and discuss it in the QUEST Community Science Blog.

Construction Photographer
Made by Stephen Foster
This young man is Cagney. He works for an outfit named Multivista. His work is to document construction progress and as-built by building a photo-mosaic of every layer of the work. Cagney's previous work was as a carpenter, not photography - important here because he knows how to read plans. We talked photography between the busy times. Entry fourteen in mostly 365. Ready for Battle
Made by kqedquest
Junior, the robotic car, is sponsored by Red Bull and Google, among many others. Here, the car is primed for battle before the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. Listen to the companion KQED-FM Radio piece on KQED QUEST and discuss it in the QUEST Community Science Blog.

Kinky
Made by Andrionni Ribo (Northern California, USA)
This band rocked the second stage... their music performance was solid and resulted in me buying their decent 3rd album. But their first album i got off eMusic when I got home rocks. Their style: rock-electronic-dance-funky-mexican

Boyd, Dave, Carter, and Stefan. LeRoi was too far stage left to get in the shot. Aside from that, I'm surprised that this shot came out surprisingly clear for my poor little cameraphone to snag in the poor lighting conditions

These are the seats we had on Friday. Not the best. Might as well have been sitting in the lawn for how far back we were.
