The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁舎 Tōkyō Tochōsha), also referred to as Tokyo City Hall or Tochō (都庁) for short, houses the headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which governs not only the 23 wards, but also the cities, towns and villages that make up Tokyo as a whole. Located in Shinjuku, it held the title of the tallest building (by roof height) in Tokyo, at 243 meters (799 feet), from 1991 to late 2006, when it surrendered its title upon the completion of Midtown Tower. The two top-floor panoramic observation decks are free of charge to the public and contain many gift shops. They are open till 11 pm on weekdays. Use of cameras is permitted, but tripods are forbidden. The building consists of a complex of three structures, each taking up a city block. The tallest and most prominent of the three is Tokyo Metropolitan Main building No.1, a tower 48 stories tall that splits into two sections at the 33rd floor. The building also has three levels below ground. The design of the building (which was meant to resemble a computer chip), by architect Kenzo Tange (and associates), has many symbolic touches, most notably the aforementioned split which re-creates the look of a Gothic cathedral. The building was finished in 1991 at the expense of ¥157 billion (about US$ 1 billion) of public money. The other two buildings in the complex are the eight-story Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Building (including one underground floor) and Tokyo Metropolitan Main Building No.2, which has 37 stories including three below ground. In The 1991 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, The Metropolitan government building is destroyed by Godzilla in a fight with Mecha-King Ghidorah. The Tokyo metropolitan government building is the last remaining Tokyo landmark after the city is in ruins in the anime series, Mobile Fighter G Gundam. In the anime series Digimon Tamers, the towers are the home base for Hypnos, a government organization hunting the titular Digimon. In the movie and TV series versions of the anime X by CLAMP, the headquarters of the Dragons of Earth is located underneath the building complex. In Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, the complex sits, half underwater, atop the Shinjuku Underground Nuclear Installation; a notable location within a recurring subplot. Urban Energy

The ultimate urban metropolis, this is Tokyo, Japan. This photo was taken in the Shinjuku district on a rather busy weekend night. I had seen several jaw dropping photos of Tokyo over the years and couldn't wait to see all the amazing neon lights and mega skyscrapers. After finally getting to experience the city in person, it was far more unbelievable than I had ever imagined! You'll have to view it large to fully appreciate all the detail, I can literally stare at this scene for hours. For this shot, I combined 9 bracketed exposures together to bring in all the color and light in the scene. Because it was so bright, I actually had to adjust my exposure balance by 2 steps as well as use my ND filter combined with a long enough exposure to capture all of the traffic motion. I actually waited through 9 lights in order to complete the set and capture all the lights from the cars whizzing by. At one point, a guy started coming toward me and I thought for sure he was security or something official and would ask me to get out of the street. Instead, it was a fairly intoxicated tourist that began dancing in circles in front of me while saying take a picture of me, take a picture of me! As I was in the middle of my set and didn't want to touch my camera, I pretended to take a picture of the man, while laughing histerically. That did the trick and off he went, likely to drink some more sake in this very popular party area :)

Skyscraper Island

Skyscraper Island

This is the famous Shinjuku district of Tokyo, Japan where towering skyscrapers are all grouped together, like an island in the city. After looking through my Tokyo photos, it was rather crazy to see just how many of my photos were looking up at the tall monoliths. I remember feeling so small in a sea of buildings. In fact, it can be quite overwhelming to try to get your bearings in a city where nearly every building for as far as the eye can see is 20 stories tall! I'd get off the subway only to find myself smack dab in the middle of another set of tall buildings. It was hard to even find the skyline at times as everything is so efficiently packed together. They even found place for a pool on the 15th floor of the building in front. To truly appreciate this view, you have to get to the top of another building from a decent distance back. This particular day, I had witnessed a fairly incredible sunrise from my hotel and did some quick weather research on where the sunset might be positioned behind the city. After bribing (literally) the management of a nearby building to give me access to their rooftop, I waited for what turned out to be a truly fantastic sunset. I was worried at first that the sunset might be a bust as a rather thick layer of haze was on the horizon. But as you can see, the haze actually turned the sunset into a spectacular rainbow of color.

View #3: An old Japanese man waits to cross the road at Shinjuku metro station - Tokyo (Japan) ___________________________________________________________________ This picture epitomizes one of the most intriguing aspect - in my sense - of Japanese culture and society. While social interactions remain quite repressive and patriarchal, beneath the surface always lurks an incredible capacity for imagination, and love for all things childish. It is thus not uncommon to see stern old Japanese men read colorful mangas in the subway, or cartoon characters adorn the hull of the Shinkansen, japan's bullet train. Here, at Shinjuku station, passengers can admire the work of one of the masters of Japanese animation, Ozamu Tezuka, renowned worldwide for drawing the adventures of a young cyborg: astroboy. ___________________________________________________________________ Visit my website www.bricerichard.com for more stories.

Sun's going down. Like a big bald head. Disappearing behind the boulevard. (Chorus:Oooeee) It's Sharkey's night. Yeah. It's Sharkey's night tonight. And the manager says: Sharkey? He's not at his desk right now. (Chorus:Oh yeah.) Could I take a message? And Sharkey says: Hey, Kowasabe! Long time no see. He says: Hey sport. You connect the dots. You pick up the pieces. He says: You know, I can see two tiny pictures of myself And there's one in each of your eyes. And they're doin' everything I do. Every time I light a cigarette, they light up theirs. I take a drink and I look in and they're drinkin' too. It's drivin' me crazy. It's drivin' me nuts. And Sharkey says: Deep in the heart of darkest America. Home of the brave. He says: Listen to my heart beat. Paging Mr. Sharkey. White courtesy telephone please. lyrics from Shakey's Night by Laurie Anderson @Tokyo *Leica M6+Noctilux 50mm f1.0+Ilford XP-2 Super 400

Super Exciting Relax!

Better here: We were traveling in a cab through Tokyo when we passed this street on an overpass. I dropped my wife off at the hotel and took a cab back to this spot. Over the next few hours, I watched the most amazing thing... It seemed as if there were literally countless businessmen that would get off their trains and, before heading home to their families, would eat sushi in a tiny, cramped bar. Each sushi bar was literally too small for chairs, so the men - all in their identical, dark suits - would stand and eat, drink and smoke with one another for what seemed like hours. Of course, there were the more adventurous ones that went to Pachinko - or even 'massage parlors'. Then, they'd stumble back to their trains, arm in arm, and ride back home.

2007, August 20th, 6PM One small Photolab called Komeido Studio which is 3 minutes away from my office, closed their business after a half century of history involving Photography. The studio was running by an old man and his wife, and I always keep visiting this Lab to let them process my own color negative films for the past couple of years. They didn't make any announcement about closing their business until the last day, and I was the last customer, so I wanted to make a last one portrait of him standing in his own Kingdom which he kept for the most of the time of his own life. It was 5PM.....1 more hour until he close the shop. Deep respect to the gentleman.......

Tokyo Flow

Tokyo Flow

A view of traffic flowing past the Sompo Japan Building in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo. Taken twenty or so minutes after sunset so that the sky retained some color. It was still a little too bright so I had to use an ND8 filter to produce long-enough exposure to get the trails. I think this is a popular spot for photographers in Tokyo because another guy started setting up his tripod just as I was leaving, and I've seen the same angle a few times elsewhere on flickr, which was my inspiration. The problem is that these pedestrian bridges bounce a lot, so you have to wait for the perfect storm of limited foot traffic and good traffic flow.

I wanted to see the sun setting, but couldn't make it. I had to wait in line for about 40 minutes to go up to the observation deck. Anyway, I was able to see the sky right after the sun had set. That was nice. To get this shot, I used the Ninja Ref I bought last week, and it worked so well. I got a lot of attention from the photographers on the observation deck :-p By the way, I was happy to be able to see Mt. Fuji this evening! Ninja Ref is the reflector you can attach to your lens. It cuts the reflections on the glass from behind.

The second annual 'Fragments of Tokyo' Exhibition ended quietly. I know that this is not the best timing for exhibiton in Tokyo. but we did. This is our decision. And, we are satisfied. We are satisfied because we did 'normal thing' under this crazy chaos. We are satisfied because our photographic synchronizing has evolved steadily. Above all, we are very satisfied because our friends are okay. Thank you so much for coming to our show. See you next time (probably in autumn).

After some refining. HDR shot of Tokyo from the Metro Building. I didn't want to have the overboard HDR effect, but more of a subtle enhancement; something that makes you pause and ponder. ***UPDATE 9/19/2007: I replaced the original shot with one that I think is much better, in between the original darker one and the lighter one, I think this is a lot clearer! I did some more fine-tuning and tweaking (especially with the color profile!)

I was out with one of my students last night. We were on our way to the top of the NS Building and found this view from the 13th Floor. The borders top and bottom are actually the window-surrounds. I shot this at about f/7.1 for 2seconds, lens-hood removed, lens flat against the window with my weight pushing against it to brace it still. No tripod? Just improvise!
