This is what it looked like during Philadelphia Open Studio Tours in October of 2005. It's never this clean. What you don't see, because it's out of frame (behind me) are my major sources of inspiration. I have a large etigiere filled with books about my favorite artists. It also has my stereo. I find myself listening to the same music I did in college. What's funny is that the music tends to choreograph my painting. If I'm listening to something with a latin beat, I tend to paint faster and looser. More somber music tends to have the opposite effect. Next to that is my mini fridge filled with tons of bottled water. It gets really hot in here. I don't have any air conditioning and I work with lots of heat to melt the wax I use to paint with. Clinging to the outer wall of the refridgerator are my poetry magnets. I often use them to make nonsense titles for my paintings. One of the most important elements of my studio is right next to the fridge. It's my comfy IKEA chair and ottoman. Sometimes, I just need to sit and stare or explore my paintings. This is a very active part of the process. I'll often do cryptograms to cleanse my mind and then look up at a work in progress. Hopefully I'll see it in a new light if I'm having a problem. If that doesn't work I often turn my paintings upside down. Another trick I use is to photograph my paintings and upload them to my computer. Then I open them in Photoshop and just play. I've solved many a problem this way. Anyway, I hope to be moving to a bigger space this summer. You wouldn't believe how much junk is hidden behind that white board.

2006 © Karen Freedman encaustic and oil stick on wood panels 36 x 36 My son requested that I make him an original encaustic painting for over his 'leather' sofa in his dorm room. After getting past my own memories of hand-me-down furniture, posters, and cinder block shelving, I relented. What better flattery is there than for my son to want one of my paintings in his room? I decided to make it up of 6 x 6 blocks so it would be easier to pack up and transport at the end of each semester. The quality of this photo stinks. It's out of focus on the bottom but I didn't have a chance to have it professionally photographed before my son wisked it off to school.
