Semarang
Semarang is a city on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is the capital of the province of Central Java. It has an area of 373.67 km and approximately 1.5 million people making it the Indonesia's fifth largest city. Semarang is located at 658'S 11025'E. A major port during the Dutch colonial era, and still an important port today, the city is known in Indonesia for its large ethnically Chinese population. The name of the city, Semarang, may have originated from the concatenation of the words "asem" (tamarind) and "arang" (rare). Another version is that Semarang is originated from Chinese word Sam Po Lang (San Bao Loong), meaning the city of Sam Po (Admiral Zheng He).
- Sam Po Kong Temple, Jl. Simongan No. 129, ☎ +62 24 7605 277. The beautiful Sam Po Kong temple (Gedung Batu) was built to respect the Muslim Chinese commander named Cheng Ho of Ming Dinasty who visited Semarang in the early 15th century. It was extensively renovated in 2006 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Cheng Ho's voyage to Semarang.
Northern Semarang has a lot of old Dutch colonial buildings. This was where the old walled city located. The wall is no longer there, but many of the old building remains, especially in the area called Kota Lama (The Old Town). On certain months, this part of Semarang is flooded by the rising tide (called "rob" in Javanese).
- Tanjung Mas. A busy, important port during Dutch occupation (from 17th century to 1945).
- Gereja Blenduk, Jalan Letjen Suprapto 32. The name means "domed church". A beautiful Protestant church built in 1753, it is the oldest church in Semarang. It has a baroque organ, a rarity in Indonesia
- Stasiun Tawang. The oldest major railway station in Java, completed in 1870.
Simpang Lima (means "five intersection") is a vast square at the heart of Semarang. At night, you can eat, drink or just bring yourself wandering around Simpang Lima.
Semarang has a very good landscape, some says best landscape thanks to its coastal area in the northern part of the city with Tanjung Mas as its international harbour and hilly area in the southern part streching from Candi area to Bukit Sari with picturesque Mount Ungaran at the background.
Before you get into hilly area named Bukit Sari, you will see on your left Taman Tabanas Gombel where you can stop by, drink tea and see Semarang's view from the hill. It's view is really beautiful and romantic during the night time.
Gunung Ungaran with its tea and jasmine plantation, Gua Kreo/Kreo Cave with its interesting stalagtit and stalagmit and of course Marina at Tanjung Mas are the alternatives for those who has more than 2 free days in Semarang.
Monuments
Tugu Muda is one of Semarang's landmark. It is situated westward off Simpang Lima, one of the 5 streets crossing Simpang Lima named Jalan Pandanaran. This monument commemorated the 5 days fierce battle (October 14, 1945) between Indonesian freedom fighters and Japanese soldiers who refused to surrender their weapon.
The buildings around Tugu Muda are some from the old Dutch buildings, the famous one is Lawang Sewu or "Thousand Windows" derives from its many windows. During the World War II, the building was the Japanese army's headquarter.

The building is also referred to as The Building with 1,000 doors. You can imagine why. Former office building of the NISM, short for Nederlands(ch)-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (Dutch Indies Railroad Company). Semarang played a key role in railway history of Indonesia. In Dutch colonial era, there was a tram system in Semarang before being dismantled in early 1940s. There are two large train stations in Semarang, Semarang Poncol and Semarang Tawang. The two stations operate train service to Tegal, Slawi, Bandung, Jakarta, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Cepu, Bojonegoro, Jombang, Kediri, Malang, and Surabaya. Taste of Indonesia: Diversity are welcome in our country!

Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah (Central Java Grand Mosque) # Alamak, minaret-nya~ # Alamak, cropped-nya~ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The month consists of twenty-nine days, but do not fast till you sight it (the moon) and do not break your fast till you sight it. If the weather is cloudy, calculate it thirty days. When the twenty-ninth of Sha'ban came, Ibn Umar would send someone (who tried) to sight the moon for him. If it was sighted, then well and good; in case it was not sighted, and there was no cloud and dust before him (on the horizon), he would not keep fast the next day. If there appeared (on the horizon) before him cloud or dust, he would fast the following day. Ibn Umar would end his fasting alone with the people, and did not follow this calculation. ~Sunan Abu-Dawud, The Hadith Book 13. Fasting (Kitab As-Siyam) :2312~ So either today or tomorrow you celebrate Eid, no problem at all, it's okay. Stay in unity, diversity are welcome in our country. Keroncong Musician
Made by omGun
Sketched using Lamy Ballpoint. Those sketches were made during the Keroncong performance on a wedding feast of a friend of mine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kroncong Keroncong originated and developed in Java with great Portuguese influence using the ukelele and other stringed instruments. One style of keroncong which developed is called 'langgam jawa' which uses many of the rhythmic patterns heard typically in gamelan music along with the pelog scale. In this style there is a great amount of gamelan influence. In its original form, it consisted of songs sung with the accompaniment of the Indian sitar, the rebab or bowed chordaphone, the suling or bamboo flute, the gendang, kenong and saron of the gamelan ensemble, and a gong. Today, these instruments are sometimes replaced by the guitar (for sitar), violin (for rebab), modern flute, cello (which takes on the role of the gamelan instruments) and the bass (which substitutes the gong). Modern keroncong groups may even include the accordian and the vibraphone to add extra colour. The vocals however still remain traditional, based mainly on the Javanese pelog or slendro scales.

A solitary walker using the narrow guage railway bed as a path
Made by D70
Most rail transport in Indonesia is located on the island of Java, which has two major rail lines that run the length of the island, as well as several connecting lines. The island of Sumatra has three (soon to be four) unconnected railway lines in the northernmost province of Aceh, North Sumatra (the area surrounding Medan, West Sumatra (Padang and its environs), and South Sumatra and Lampung. Indonesia's railways are operated by the state-owned PT Kereta Api, and the newly-formed PT Kereta Api Jabotabek, operating the commuter lines in the Jakarta metropolitan area. The infrastructure is government-owned, and the companies pay a fee for the usage of the railway lines. Indonesia's rail gauge is 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in), although 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) and 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) lines previously existed. New construction in Aceh has the 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) gauge. Most of the Jakarta metropolitan area is electrified at 1500 V DC overhead. Various narrow gauge industrial tramways operate in Java and Sumatra, serving the sugarcane and oil palm industries.

Pak ustad bilang, Ada orang yang hidupnya berlimpahan harta, perusahaannya banyak. Tapi sering sakit-sakitan. ^_^
